City & Guilds 2357-13 - Option 1 - Knowledge Units

City & Guilds 2357-13 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment

New for 2011, this Electrical qualification is set to be an alternative route into the Electrical industry and will be available alongside the C&G 2330 for the next few years until the C&G 2330 is eventually phased out.

This new Electrical qualification is designed to suit those of you new to the Electrical industry as well as those who are existing practitioners, similar to the technical certificates (C&G 2330) and NVQs (C&G 2356) in that it is effectively a combination of these existing qualifications with some additional details which are more in line with the more modern electrical industry.

Why has this qualification been introduced?

For several years the Building Services Engineering sector has used NVQ's as the currency for an individual to demonstrate competence. During this time SummitSkills has reviewed and revised the National Occupational Standards for the industry in consultation with employers.

In addition to this SummitSkills has carried out extensive consultation with other qualification stakeholders, including Lecturers and Assessors; Learners; Trade Associations; Trade Unions and Competent Persons Scheme operators. This research is the basis for the design and content of the new qualification.

EAL and City & Guilds have been responsible for determining the final assessment instruments/methodology utilised within the units/qualification in accordance with assessment strategy, e.g, written tests and assignments, simulated performance activities and on-site assessment.

The knowledge that you require in order to become an Electrician as approved by the industry has not changed, the science, principles, calculations and methodology is the same as it has always been.

The changes reflected by this new qualification are the manner in which you are assessed and the introduction of modern methods of undertaking electrical work. In addition to this there is a new study unit relating to Renewable Technologies which makes this qualification more in line with what is current, more modern if you like.

Adult Learners

Adult learners and career changers etc may find that the only route to study for this Electrical qualification is via a private training provider. At present, Further Education colleges have not committed to providing part time/evening courses for Adult Learners for this Electrical qualification as the length of time allocated to it means that part time could equate to 4 - 5 years of education.

Colleges are funded and paid according to results achieved and are therefore looking at quicker results which they will achieve with 16 - 18 year old full time students. In addition, colleges are governed by set intake dates, usually September each year.

Able Skills is not reliant upon government funding in any way, shape or form and this means that we can allocate training hours in whichever way we determine meets the needs of our customers. As long as we deliver the content of this Electrical qualification and meet the assessment/test criteria, we can produce this 2357 Electrical course in whatever training format we feel will work for our students.

In addition, we are not restricted to a September start date so therefore we will run these qualifications throughout the year with several start dates which should suit most people, we will even offer this 2357 Electrical course utilising weekend training.

Is Home Study an option?

We don't think so. Able Skills is a firm believer in the need to ‘be here' where you have the benefit of an instructor at all times and where you can integrate theory sessions with practical tasks at the drop of a hat. This new Electrical qualification has been devised in a manner which makes home study for this virtually impossible.

The complexity of this level 3 qualification requires some assessment by ‘long answer questions' and unless you have the benefit of an experienced instructor you would undoubtedly find this aspect of the qualification virtually impossible.

Practical Training at Able Skills

This Electrical qualification has been written by the awarding bodies to be delivered on a predominantly theory basis with minimal practical requirements.

It is therefore the responsibility of all training providers to ensure that they devise their own comprehensive practical training programme to ensure that candidates have the required skills to be able to undertake all aspects of Electrical installations.

To show our commitment to training the Electricians of tomorrow, we are also offering everyone who attends this course the opportunity to attend for an additional week, at no extra cost, to undertake a full week in our workshop going through various aspects of practical electrical installations:

• Conduit bending techniques
• Measuring techniques
• Threading and joint boxes
• Cutting and fitting methods
• Single core wiring methods (selection of cable sizes)
• Fixing and termination of cables (various types)
• Identification of electrical components
• Installation of lighting circuits to include 1 way and 2 way switching
• P.I.R switching and domestic type smoke detectors
• Steel and PVC conduit
• Fabrication of components in steel trunking
• Testing of completed installation
• Introduction to types of cable tray system and basket system

We do not feel that a competent Electrician is one that has spent 80% of his/her study time in a classroom, this is after all a job which is practical but supported by technical knowledge.

City & Guilds 2357 Electrical Courses - Option 1 - Knowledge Units Course Fees are £6995.00 (inc vat)

City & Guilds 2357-13 - Option 1 - Knowledge Units

This Electrical qualification is new for 2011 and will become the recognised route for those wishing to gain access to the electrical installation industry.

The qualification will cover underpinning knowledge necessary for the Electrical industry and will provide you with the required knowledge and skills associated with the Electrical industry which you can build upon by undertaking additional study options associated with Electricians qualifications at a later date should this be your choice.

The aim of this Electrical course is to provide and help develop regulation knowledge, practical skills and science required for electrical installation work.

This Electrical course will also provide an understanding of the Health & Safety requirements governing electrical installation processes, and knowledge of the organisation and structure of the electrical industry within which these activities are carried out.

This Electrical course covers the basic principles of electrical installation and you will study:

• Motors and Controls
• Lighting
• Electrical Principles
• Health & Safety
• Installation technology

All of which is needed to become a qualified electrician. In addition, there is also a unit dedicated to Renewable Energy.

During this period of Electrical study at Able Skills, the units you will complete are:

1. Knowledge units

These units will be delivered at Able Skills dedicated Electrical training centre and will be a mix of theory based classroom tuition and workshop practical tasks. This will give you the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of identified topics and subject areas.

There will be some formal City & Guilds devised practical assessments within these units as well as some centre devised practical assignments to consolidate your knowledge, these will relate to:

2357-301: Understanding Health and Safety legislation, practices and procedures (Installing and maintaining electrotechnical systems and equipment)

2357-302: Understanding environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems

2357-303: Understanding the practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment (Electrical Installation)

2357-304: Understanding the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electrotechnical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment

2357-305: Understanding the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electrotechnical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment

2357-306: Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems

2357-307: Understanding principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment

2357-308: Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrotechnical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment

2357-309: Understanding the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems

In order to achieve this qualification in full, you will also be required to undertake unit

2357 - 399: Electrotechnical Occupational Competence. This is an Independent Assessment, more commonly known as AM2.

The reason we are offering different training package options is because in the 8 years that we have been providing Electrical qualifications, we have had students from all over the UK.

It may be preferable and much more convenient for individuals to achieve the knowledge units at Able Skills but to then undertake the Independent Assessment Unit closer to home

In addition to the Knowledge units and the Independent Assessment, there is also the requirement to achieve Performance Units and again, this is available via Able Skills if you choose (see C&G 2357 - The Complete Qualification) Alternatively, you may wish to undertake this Work Based Assessment process with an Assessor closer to your home which we can provide guidance on.

Electrical Course Structure for Knowledge Units

The structure of a training course is often what makes a particular training course attractive to a potential customer so it is important for us that we get the structure and timings right. It is also important that we provide training to adult learners in a very different way to that which is provided to school leavers.

Able Skills instructors have worked tirelessly since the details of this new qualification became available and have managed to put together a training plan which will ensure that this qualification is delivered in manageable chunks of learning to give every candidate a full and comprehensive understanding of each of the above listed units.

Electrical Training Programme 1: 4 consecutive weeks

2 week break allocated

Electrical Training Programme 2: 6 consecutive weeks

2 week break allocated

Electrical Training Programme 3: 4 consecutive weeks

2 week break allocated

Electrical Training Programme 4: 6 consecutive weeks

As you can see from the training schedule which we have put together, this aspect (Knowledge Units) of this Electrical qualification can be achieved with 20 weeks of training over a 26 week period (6 months)

The break times can be used for:

• Additional study

• Putting your skills to the test if you have access to electrical work

• More courses for those who may feel ready to undertake C&G 2382 / C&G 2392 etc

• Or the break times can just be used to rest before returning to the centre

At the end of the 20 weeks we are completely convinced that those students who have successfully completed the training will be competent and industry ready and this is where the Performance Units (NVQ) aspect of this qualification can be achieved.

Fees for City & Guilds 2357-13 Level 3 NVQ Diploma Knowledge Units are £6995.00 inc VAT.

Effectively, Able Skills are offering this qualification for the same price as we do for the C&G combined 2330 at levels 2 and 3 but with an additional 5 weeks of training.

Structured payment plans are available for this course. A £500 deposit is required to secure a start date and the balance can then be spread equally over the entire 6 month period @ £324.75 per week - no interest will be charged.

C&G 2357 - Training Options 1, 2 & 3

The reason we are offering different training package options is because in the 8 years that we have been providing Electrical qualifications, we have had students attend from all over the UK.

If it is convenient for you to achieve just the Knowledge Units with Able Skills then this C&G 2357 Option 1 is for you.

If you would like to achieve both the Knowledge Units and the Independent Assessment Unit via Able Skills then maybe C&G 2357 Option 2 is the preferred or better suited training package.

In addition to the Knowledge Units and the Independent Assessment, there is also the requirement to achieve Performance Units and again, this is available via Able Skills if you choose (see C&G 2357 Option 3 - The Complete Qualification)

City & Guilds 2330 - Technical Certificates

A decision in March 2011 was made by City & Guilds to continue with the existing technical certificates "off framework" which effectively means that any training providers who do not draw down funding can continue to offer this version of Electrical training.

If the route of the C&G 2330 at level 2 and 3 are a better option for you, this remains available via Able Skills. Please visit C&G 2330 level 2 or C&G 2330 level 3
