Painting & Decorating to NVQ standards by Able Skills
Able Skills has devised a 6 week Painting and Decorating course which is structured to have you industry ready, confident and competent to start tackling any Painting and Decorating jobs. During the 6 weeks, you will have the opportunity to obtain a City & Guilds qualification in painting and decorating and also train to achieve the units required to satisfy occupational standards to gain an NVQ at level 2.
The 6 weeks is split to provide you with practical and theory training to achieve City & Guilds 6217-03 before moving you onto the reality of NVQ training and assessment processes.
Step 1 – City & Guilds Painting & Decorating Award
This is an intensive 4 weeks of hands on training, during which time you will gather evidence to support a City & Guilds Painting & Decorating qualification which comprises some of the following units:
Optional Units
- 006 – Painting a timber window frame
- 007 – Applying emulsion to wall by roller
- 008 – Painting doors and frames
- 009 – Applying oil based paint to walls by roller
- 062 – Removing and hanging wallpaper to walls
- 063 – Hanging paper to ceilings and painting
Mandatory Units
- 010 – Rust removal and priming metal
- 011 – Applying paint by spraying
- 012 – Introduction to glazing for painting and decorating
- 013 – Using broken colour techniques
- 014 – Working with hardwood finishes
- 015 – Removing and refitting a water-filled radiator
- 064 – Introduction to artexing and coving
During the entire training period you will undertake training and assessment, at all times gathering knowledge to support your City & Guilds award. This qualification and everything you have learned will act as your underpinning knowledge to move you into the industry and work towards achieving a City & Guilds NVQ.
Step 2 – Painting & Decorating Training to NVQ Occupational Standards
NVQs can only be achieved within the workplace as they are based on an assessment of your competencies in your specific trade. To assist you in gaining your NVQ within the painting & decorating industry, Able Skills will also provide you with additional ‘reality’ training with complete guidance on the standards you are expected to meet as a Painter/Decorator to warrant the award of an NVQ. This training will also provide you with a detailed understanding of all aspects of health and safety in order to achieve the first 3 units of any NVQ:
- VR01: Conform to general workplace safety
- VR02: Conform to efficient work practices
- VR03: Move and handle resources
Before moving on to more subject based training in order to achieve an understanding of the next set of units:
- VR250F: Erect and dismantle access working platforms
- VR332D: Prepare surfaces for painting/decorating
- VR333D: Apply paint systems by brush and roller
Able Skills has 2 full time Painting & Decorating Assessors, Martin and Mark; you can find out more about them on our Staff page. Both have spent many years working within the painting industry so they are fully aware of what is acceptable as evidence for an NVQ portfolio. They will provide guidance throughout to prepare you for the industry so that any task you undertake or job you come across will be achievable.
You will also receive full guidance on pricing various jobs, estimating quantities, selecting the right materials for the right job and how to market yourself or your business.
When you leave to start work within the Painting & Decorating industry, you will have a ready made portfolio to start building your work evidence in. You can contact your Assessors at any time by using Able Skills Forum to check your progress or to ask them any questions you may have to help you further.
Reality training is what will get you industry ready, along with your City & Guilds Painting and Decorating qualification.
Able Skills Painting & Decorating Training Facilities
Able Skills painting and decorating courses are undertaken in a specifically designated training centre with every conceivable scenario in place to test your skills.
We have everything in place to meet City & Guilds standards and then that little bit extra to ensure that as many aspects of Painting & Decorating are covered, be it internal or external work, homes or offices, small rooms or larger areas, the training at Able Skills will leave you very well prepared for any job.

We believe that we are worth the journey to Kent which is why we have our own local accommodation for students travelling from further a field. Our Accommodation is available on a room only basis and has been furnished to ensure that you have a comfortable experience whilst at Able Skills.
This is a hands-on, practical course, it is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential. All tools and materials will be provided throughout your training period.
