Initial Assessment applies to anyone who is looking to be assessed on an appliance of any kind for the very first time or where 12 months has elapsed since certificate expiry.
Category 1 Applicants
If you are a time served Gas Engineer but are undertaking assessment on an appliance which you have not previously held certification for OR the appliance expired more than 12 months ago, you will need to view the details of the chart detailed in our course content page for times and cost.
If you have held the appliance certification previously, you will benefit from the training which is built into the price as standard although more comprehensive refresher training is available if required.
Category 2 Applicants
Category 2 Candidates are those of you who hold nationally recognised, gas trade associated qualifications and who can provide evidence of 'on-the-job' gas installation and/or maintenance gas work, carried out under direct supervision of competent operatives employed by a GAS SAFE registered business.

Examples of appropriate qualifications include:
1. Plumbing craft qualification or National/Scottish Vocational Qualification (N/SVQ) (oil and/or solid fuel options) - suitable initially for domestic or commercial central, water heating or pipework installation
2. Pipefitter/Welder craft qualification or N/SVQ - suitable initially for commercial pipework, pipework commissioning and meter installation
3. Heating and Ventilation craft qualification or N/SVQ - suitable initially for commercial pipework and appliance installation
4. Refrigeration engineer/fitter craft qualification or N/SVQ - suitable initially for commercial appliance and pipework installation
Written evidence from the employer of 'on-the-job' gas installation and/or maintenance gas work, carried out under direct supervision of competent operatives employed by a GAS SAFE registered business, must be provided.
Category 3 Applicants (New Entrants)
Category 3 Candidates are those of you who are unable to provide a relevant related qualification and/or experience (as listed above).
If you have not undertaken training at Able Skills Bradford or Dartford, in order to qualify for ACS Initial Assessment, you will need to provide evidence of having undertaken training on a managed learning programme of some kind as well as ‘On the job' evidence, working under supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer.
This will usually be in the format of a portfolio supplied by your training provider - this is required to verify that you have undertaken gas work safely and competently.
Our Bradford based gas trainer/assessor will probably need to conduct a brief interview with you to look at all of the evidence noted above. This can be arranged by calling our office on 0808 100 3245 or email: info@ableskills.co.uk

Re-sits / Additional or Refresher Training
If candidates fail to achieve the required level of competency in either the practical or theory assessment, it may be necessary for them to re-sit the sections which they have failed. If this situation arises an additional cost may be incurred.
To avoid this situation, training is available to suit an individual's requirements and we do recommend this, particularly for Category One candidates who have been out of the industry for a number of years.
Training will usually be 10 days dependent upon requirements but you will be better prepared and will provide yourself with a better opportunity of achieving the ACS successfully. Please call us on Freephone 0808 100 3245 for details.
Upon successful completion of CCN1 and at least 1 appliance, you will be eligible to approach Gas Safe Register (CORGI replacement) to register as a Gas Installer or add the appliance to your Gas Safe card (appropriate to existing Engineers)
CORGI > Gas Safe Register
The way Gas Installers register has changed and Corgi has been replaced by Gas Safe Register as of 1 April 2009. It is now the official industry stamp for gas safety.
The Health and Safety Executive, who is responsible for regulating gas safety in Great Britain, oversees Gas Safe Register.
The change was brought about to provide enhanced levels of service and clearly written rules of registration. There are new services and benefits designed to improve the registration scheme and promote gas safety.
Please visit www.gassaferegister.co.uk for details of how the changes affect new and existing Gas Operatives
