Installing gas appliances and systems requires you to have certain skills in place so if you have never worked comprehensively with copper or steel pipe or have never undertaken any soldering of any kind then we do recommend that you consider this New Entrant Gas Training Package as it will cover these particular skills as well as:

· Gas Training
· Placement for Portfolio Building
· Gas Assessments
Able Skills Bradford has devised a comprehensive package of training, work placement and assessment for those of you looking to completely retrain and gain access to the Gas industry. This complete package will provide you with all of the skills, knowledge and experience to become Gas Safe registered so that you can start a new career as a Gas Engineer.
If you do not require training in aspects of copper pipework and low carbon steel please visit New Entrant Gas Training Package – Experienced Plumbers or if you do not require a complete package because you can arrange your own Gas Safe registered Engineer to work with to complete your portfolio then you may just want to consider our 5 Day Pipeskills Course and/or followed by our 3 Week Gas Training Course.
New Entrant (Category 3) Candidates are:
• those of you who are brand new to the gas industry and
• those of you do not hold the relevant gas trade associated qualifications, even if you have been working within the Gas industry
Long gone are the days where the Gas industry was inaccessible unless you spent 3 – 5 years at College. Managed learning programmes have now been put into place and are ideally suited to career changers as any time away from your existing job is minimal. These are fast track training programmes but it doesn’t make them any less comprehensive than 3 years at College, in fact they are probably more comprehensive because the learning time is so condensed.
The areas of knowledge and skills that you will need to undertake to be able to register with Gas Safe are broken down into:
1. Practical skills
2. Knowledge units
3. Performance units
4. Assessments
Able Skills Bradford has devised a complete training programme to incorporate all of these aspects to make the whole process as accessible as possible for you.
New Entrant (Category 3) Gas Training Package – Non-Experienced Individuals
1. Practical Skills = Pipework Skills for Gas Training
The aim of this 5 day pipe-skills course is to provide individuals with a basic understanding of pipework related activities.
If you do not have what you consider to be comprehensive pipework skills then we do recommend that you undertake this 5 day course first as you will be assessed on these skills within the first 2 days of Able Skills Gas training programme. If you are unsuccessful at that stage, you will be unable to move forward and complete the course. We also recommend this particular course as a refresher for those of you who have dealt with copper pipe and steel in the past but may be a little out of practice.
1. And 2. Practical Skills and Knowledge Units = Domestic Gas Safety Training
For new entrants to the gas industry, Able Skills Bradford provides a comprehensive Managed Learning Programme which covers all aspects of domestic gas work and gas safety which will prepare you for working on various gas appliances. This new entrant's gas training course is a real mix of workshop and classroom study to ensure that all aspects of domestic gas and related appliances are covered.
Progress is monitored with regular practical and written assessments and all evidence is recorded and retained for any Governing body to view at any time; these strict control methods safeguard all candidates and assessors and ensure that accurate, quality Gas training is delivered.
3. Performance Units = Work Placement
Part of the process to becoming Gas Safe registered is to prove competence working on various aspects of gas. This will need to be undertaken under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer whereby a portfolio is completed detailing the gas work that has been done, supported by photographic evidence and signed by your Gas Safe registered Engineer.
Able Skills are able to arrange this placement for you, taking the hassle out of you searching for a suitable Gas Safe Engineer. Able Skills is working with Vokera and their Engineers to secure placements for students to ensure that the requirements of the portfolio are met to a very high standard.
Gas work will be undertaken under the supervision of Vokera’s own Engineers who have all been through a similar process themselves and who know just how demanding this aspect of the Gas Safe registration process can be.
4. Assessments = ACS (Approved Certification Scheme)
During this final hurdle, you will undertake assessment to achieve CCN1 (Core Gas Safety) and then any appliances which you are eligible to undertake (this is determined by the evidence in your work based portfolio which will have been checked by our Bradford based Gas Engineer).
Able Skills Bradford is approved by CITB for the purposes of Gas Assessment and successful candidates will receive certification for their CCN1 and Appliances from CITB.
CCN1 and at least one appliance is a requirement in order to register with Gas Safe.
Able Skills Commitment to Training
Able Skills has been delivering Managed Learning Programmes in Kent for several years now and we have watched many students go on to secure themselves fantastic jobs or set themselves up as self employed and secure some very decent contracts. We are very proud of the training we provide for potential gas course candidates and we are very conscious that getting it wrong can be fatal. We are committed to providing quality learning with the emphasis on safety and this is the model that we have brought to Able Skills Bradford.
The programmes of learning devised are to ensure that from the start, individuals are given the opportunity to work towards becoming competent and safe Gas Engineers; all of the Gas training we provide is arranged to identify an individual's suitability for the Gas industry and to assist them in achieving the required standards to work within the Gas industry
Our Bradford based Gas Instructor/Assessor will provide guidance, support and assistance in a realistic environment to build confidence and competence so that you are ready to undertake your work placement.
Training to achieve Able Skills Managed Learning Programme Gas Certificate is recommended to ensure knowledge of changes to legislation, British Standards and industry best practice. If you come under the category of New Entrant, this is the correct and recognised route to take to get you started.

At Able Skills Bradford we have arranged a package of training whereby we provide you with access to all of the steps required:
Stage 1 - Copper Pipe And Low Carbon Steel - 1 Week
This 5 day course will provide you with the pipe skills required to undertake gas work to an acceptable and safe standard. During this course we will teach you how to solder copper pipe and how to deal with low carbon steel. You will undertake assessments throughout the week so that we are satisfied that you have fully grasped these skills which will ensure safety when eventually, you are dealing with gas related situations and appliances.
Stage 2 - Domestic Gas Safety Training - 3 Weeks
This 3 week long Gas course is essential training and assessment for all candidates looking to gain access to the Gas Industry.
Week 1
Week 1 of this Gas Training Course will provide you with a great insight into the Gas industry and present you with an understanding of the guidelines and regulations which currently govern the ACS scheme.
During this week of gas training, we will again cover basic pipework skills, gas appliance functions and the basic principles of flues and combustion to give candidates the knowledge required to move forward to the next aspect of this Gas course.
At the end of this initial 5 days of gas training, you will undertake a written assessment/multiple choice exam to establish your understanding of the areas that have been covered so far.
Weeks 2 and 3
As you progress through the weeks, the gas course will develop and you will receive training in:
1. Legislation
2. Tightness Testing
3. Pipework requirements
4. Gas safety controls
Again, you will undertake a series of exams and practical assessments to satisfy your instructor that you fully understand all the areas covered at this stage.
Finally, we will provide you with training in:

And with time permitting, we will provide extra training in the servicing of various appliances.

Work based Competence and Gas Portfolios
Following completion of your 3 weeks of Gas training, exams and assessments you will be deemed competent to undertake supervised gas work. It will be during this time that you will build a comprehensive portfolio of evidence to demonstrate your competence and safety whilst undertaking gas work.
Able Skills will arrange this placement for you alongside a suitable Gas Safe registered Engineer who will guide you through the requirements of the portfolio.
You will receive instruction throughout on how the portfolio evidence should be recorded and in addition, all Able Skills Gas Instructors are readily available to answer any questions or queries which may arise whilst you are building your evidence.
This placement can take anywhere from 6 weeks and upwards to complete as you will be reliant on your allocated Engineers workload.
