Achievement Measurement 2 (AM2) by Able Skills
Able Skills is firmly established as leaders in the Electrical training industry, currently delivering all Electrical qualifications up to and including City & Guilds 2356 - NVQ level 3.
The natural progression for us is to be able to offer assessment for AM2 (Achievement Measurement 2)
AM2 is a 3 day industry recognised trade test which is conducted under controlled conditions. The test is administered by the National Electrotechnical Training (NET) Organisation in conjunction with the Joint Industry Board (JIB) and Summit skills who are currently the Sector Skills Council for the Electrotechnical Industry.
Although AM2 Assessment is available at Able Skills, AM2 candidates are independently assessed by impartial, qualified, competent registered AM2 Test Examiners and each candidate has to demonstrate to the examiner that he/she possesses the required level of underpinning knowledge and practical skills to meet nationally accepted standards. In addition to this, each candidate must consistently show that they are competent and can demonstrate the ability to work in a safe and efficient manner and comply with all the requirements imposed by relevant Health and Safety legislation.
Satisfactory achievement of the AM2 Test will provide evidence for the Practical Performance Assessment (PPA) requirements specified in the Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ). It will also ensure candidates have the opportunity to be graded for membership of the Joint Industry Board (JIB).
AM2 Assessment is in great demand and as such, assessments should be booked well in advance.
The actual AM2 is split into 4 sections:
- Section A involves a composite installation. It is a partially completed installation which you must finish. You need to know how to terminate SWA (armoured) cable, MIMS (Mineral Insulated Metal Sheathed or simply Pyro to many) and be comfortable with simple motor circuits, although you are given a wiring diagram. Once complete a visual and a functional test needs to be carried out.
- Section B involves an inspection and test of the installation
- Section C involves safe isolation procedures and a risk assessment
- Section D is fault diagnosis and rectification
Permitted Study Material
Candidates will be allowed to refer to current copies of:
- BS7671
- ON-Site Guide
- Guidance Notes No3
These can be used in the specified study area and during inspection and testing assessments.
Permitted Tools
The Candidate may bring and use their own tools:
- Insulated combination pliers
- Selection of large, medium and small screwdrivers (cross head and philips)
- Insulated side cutting pliers
- Metric Rule

AM2 Assessment fees are £549.00 (inc vat)
AM2 Assessment Duration: 3 Days
Preparation for AM2
It is recommended that you study the AM2 leaflet in detail before you book or undertake the test as it may be that you do not carry out this particular type of work on a regular basis and therefore find it difficult if not impossible to complete the set task within the required industry set assessment period.
Able Skills has excellent training facilities and we have been able to put together a complete refresher training course for anyone looking to undertake AM2 assessment. The refresher training has been devised by Able Skills course instructors and will be delivered by them, this is completely separate to the AM2 test itself.
If you have doubts in any area at all and feel that refresher training would be beneficial, Able Skills can offer you the opportunity to attend for 2 days to cover the following:
- Basic Risk Assessment procedures
- Safe isolation of single-phase and three-phase supplies.
- Circuit Diagram theory
- Basic fault finding skills theory and practice.
- Earthing & Bonding
- Basic inspection procedure theory.
- The correct selection of valid test instruments and the associated ranges used.
- The functional testing of Low Resistance Ohmmeters and Insulation Resistance Test Instruments.
- Basic testing procedures theory and practice
- Half day practical session to include conduit, Mineral Insulated Cable and steel wire armour (SWA) work
- To assist each candidate to identify any individual personal weaknesses and to provide set revision material to assist them to rectify the problem.
