BPEC Renewable Energy Awareness Course

This course provides a Nationally recognised qualification which spans the renewable technologies. The course is designed for anyone who is looking to broaden their knowledge of all types of renewable technologies.

The course also considers emerging technologies and future developments within each specific area. As this is not an installers course, there are no pre-requisites to attend this course.

Suitable candidates for attendance are considered to be:

•    Merchants Personnel,
•    Sales Personnel,
•    Self Builders,
•    Heating Engineers,
•    Plumbers and
•    Builders

Those who are looking to achieve a broad understanding of Renewable Technologies and how they can be used. This can then be followed up, if required with specific installation courses on the relevant technology.

The course covers an overview, costs, market conditions, limitations, payback periods and application for the following renewable technologies:

•    Solar Thermal & Solar Photovoltaic (PV)
•    Heat Pumps
•    Wind Turbines
•    Micro-hydro
•    Domestic biomass systems

This is a flexible course and consists of 7 two hour modules, therefore it can be delivered over 2 days in total or it can be delivered on a more flexible basis across a longer period of time of weekends and evenings.

This course is delivered in Able Skills Renewable Technologies Centre; however this can be delivered anywhere as long as we have an appropriate room. This means this qualification can be delivered in the workplace or anywhere across the country.

The course covers provides an overview of the following technologies:

•    Solar Photovoltaic systems
•    Solar Thermal systems
•    Biomass domestic systems
•    Biogass systems
•    Micro wind systems
•    Micro hydro systems
•    Ground source heat pumps
•    Air to water heat pumps
•    Air to air heat pumps

The aim of the course is to raise awareness and help the delegate identify appropriate renewable technologies. The course helps the delegate identify:

•    Which type of technology bests suites a specific application
•    What end uses best suit the technology
•    Driving forces for using renewable technologies
•    Basic understanding of how technologies work and their working components
•    Where grants can be accessed and how this fits with MCS
•    Typical installation and running costs
•    Realistic pay back periods
•    The issues relating to installing green technologies
•    Planning and building control issues / requirements
•    Co2 savings for each technology

The course is predominantly tutor led, however there are opportunities to look at working rigs in our renewable technology centre and see how these technologies work and how greater gains can be made matching complimentary technologies.
