BPEC Underfloor Heating (Design) Course

Able Skills is committed to providing training and assessment to meet the needs and demands of the industries in which we specialise and our newest investment is a Renewable Energy Training Centre. This centre focuses entirely on various aspects of renewable energy and covers a wide scope of courses, including Under-floor Heating (UFH).

With the requirement for under-floor heating becoming increasingly popular, Able Skills has become BPEC accredited for the delivery of Under-floor Heating Systems Design (UFHD)

This course concentrates on areas of design for under-floor hot water heating systems. Areas covered best suit Heating Engineers, Architects, and Plumbers who have an element of design in their work. This includes people providing design reports and quotes for under-floor heating installations.

The course mainly focuses on designing pipe systems, patterns and runs, heat loss calculations, using plans and architects drawings to work through the design process.

On day 2 of this course you will be provided with a design project to complete and with guidance from your tutor you will produce a complete design spec and quantitative summary of materials required. This will provide you with relevant experience and give you confidence in designing specifications from start to finish.

The course is delivered over 6 modules and has the following objectives:

•    Explain good design principles of UFH systems
•    State the advantages of UFH systems
•    Identify the design conditions and relevant standards appropriate to UFH systems
•    Carry out heat loss calculations
•    Identify floor systems and finishes and their suitability
•    Identify the various types of UFH systems available
•    Explain the operation of UFH systems
•    Complete UFH designs using worksheets and project plans and drawings.

The pre-requisites of this course are:

•    Able to demonstrate a number of years relevant industry experience
•    A recognised trade qualification would be beneficial
•    Knowledge of heat loss calculations and prior experience of using heat loss tools would be beneficial

This course concentrates on the design principles and therefore delegates are required to work through calculations on pipe sizing, heat loss and areas. There is limited practical involved; however the different UFH systems will be demonstrated within our renewable technologies centre.

6.    UFH design project and worksheets

The delegate must also successfully complete a multiple choice exam to demonstrate competency.
