Able Skills is committed to providing training and assessment to meet the needs and demands of the industries in which we specialise and our newest investment is a Renewable Energy Training Centre. This centre focuses entirely on various aspects of renewable energy and covers a wide scope of courses, including Under-floor Heating Systems (UFH).
With the requirement for under-floor heating becoming increasingly popular, Able Skills has become BPEC accredited for the delivery of Under-floor Heating Systems for Installers.
Under-floor Heating systems are now available for all floor types; they use on average between 15% and 40% less energy than traditional heating systems and create a better standard of comfort.
This course has been developed by BPEC in association with the Under-floor Heating Manufacturers Association (UFHMA) and is recognised by IDHEE (Institute of Domestic Heating and Environmental Engineers).
It is aimed at plumbers and Heating Engineers who are looking to install Under-floor heating systems and utilise different heat sources. The course allows the delegate the opportunity to follow a design specification through to installation, providing hands on experience within Able Skills Renewable Technologies centre.
This course is predominantly suited to:
• Heating and Plumbing Engineers
• HVAC contractors
• Heat pump/solar installers
Pre-reading of training material and a reference manual will be issued prior to attendance on this 2 day training course and completion of a written multiple choice exam and a practical task during the 2 days will determine the success of candidates.
The training course covers all the topics in the training manual in more depth and includes practical work:
• Equipment required
• Floor coverings & under floor heating systems
• Running pipework
• Connections
• Electrical and mechanical systems controls
• Testing
• Filling, venting, commissioning & fault finding
• Hand over
The aim of the practical under-floor heating course is to equip the installer with the skills required to install under-floor heating systems on a domestic and commercial basis.
This course is an ideal complimentary course with Heat pumps, due to the low operating temperatures and the large surface area, it is an ideal marriage of technologies.
Pre-requisites for attendance on this Under-floor heating systems course are:
• Energy efficiency
• NVQ level 2 in plumbing and heating or 2 years industry experience
If you do not currently satisfy the entry requirements for this BPEC accredited course, Able Skills can provide you with the required training to get you to this stage. We offer City & Guilds Plumbing qualifications, Heat Pump training, Solar Thermal courses and Energy Efficiency to name but a few.
The course is a good balance between theory and knowledge to practical application. Delegates will be required to complete a full under-floor installation including commissioning, this will be carried out in Able Skills Renewable Technology Centre.
The key objectives of the course are:
• Explain the basic principles of underfloor heating (UFH) systems
• State the advantages of UFH systems
• Describe floor systems and finishes
• State the various types of UFH systems available
• Explain the operations of UFH systems
• Describe general installation and testing requirements
• Explain post installation activities for – commissioning, system operation and maintenance, troubleshooting and customer information/use.

BPEC Underfloor Heating (Design) Course
This BPEC accredited Underfloor Heating (Installer) course is predominantly suited to Heating and Plumbing Engineers, HVAC contractors and Heat pump/solar installers and covers the principles, technology, materials and components used in Underfloor Heating systems and also explains and demonstrates how to meet the design heat loss, pipework calculations and layouts and controls specification.
BPEC Energy Efficiency Course
This course is designed to provide practicing heating installers with the knowledge required to advise customers on how to get the best from their central heating system.The course provides knowledge and understanding of system layouts, controls and components and the best way install a system to comply with Part L of the Building Regulations.

Able Skills has grown and so has the amount of students in attendance and we are being used by everyone right across the UK and abroad.
As a result of the increase in students, Able Skills has purchased 3 properties to accommodate the growing numbers of people travelling from distance.
Able Skills properties are licensed HMO (Houses in Multiple Occupation) and are fully equipped in line with local authority standards.
The properties will provide you with your own fully furnished room with washing facilities and TV. There are several bathrooms/WCs as well as fully fitted kitchens and a dining areas to eat and/or meet your fellow students.
Able Skills employs someone to maintain the properties on a regular basis and also to ensure that the property is being looked after by those staying.
We are very pleased to be able to offer this accommodation at £20 per night and we are keen to ensure that your time away from home is enjoyable and comfortable. The properties are situated close to all of our training centres and some have allocated private parking facilities.
This enables you to leave your vehicle in a safe and secure environment and make that short walk to whichever course you are attending.
We are a very popular choice of training centre and as a result we are very busy and so is our accommodation. We would recommend that you make every attempt to tie in any accommodation requirements at the time of booking your course.
If our accommodation is full, there are other local alternatives available which range from £20 per night upwards.
During your stay at Able Skills accommodation we will guarantee you a secure area to keep all of your belongings and additionally, we guarantee that the only people using this property are Able Skills students.
