Bricklaying NVQBricklaying NVQ

Welcome to Able Skills NVQ Assessment Centre - Training for Bricklaying NVQ Level 2

Able Skills has developed this training plan for those of you looking to change career and train as Bricklayers. We have structured this training programme which will teach you Bricklaying from scratch but additionally, will provide you with the training, information and guidance on how to achieve an NVQ so that you can move forward in your planned career.

Delivering the correct method of training to achieve NVQ Level 2

Our 8 week course will teach you

  • To City & Guilds requirements with
  • Extra personal input from our time served Bricklaying Instructors plus
  • Training on NVQ Units as laid down by City & Guilds and Construction Awards Alliance (CITB).

This way, you will receive and benefit from 3 methods of instruction and the variety provided is what sets us apart from other Centres.
Key points are:

  • Quality Bricklaying training, good enough and detailed enough to set you up with the required industry skills.
  • A qualification which will be your entry into your chosen industry
  • Training on all NVQ units
  • Learner pack
  • Portfolio

Why 8 Weeks?

We are aware that there are many training providers who are advertising that you can achieve NVQs within 10 or 15 days, this simply isn’t possible. You cannot expect to be close to being competent enough in just 10 or 15 days and to believe that you would be is just setting yourself up for disappointment.

The truth is, NVQs are assessments carried out, at work, to establish your skill level and to establish just how competent you are in your Bricklaying abilities.
This is why we are providing you with 8 weeks of training in total preparation for the NVQ process.

Bricklaying NVQBricklaying NVQ

NVQ’s cannot be obtained in a training facility, they can only be gained once you are working within the Bricklaying industry and you need to be able to lay bricks to get into the industry!

Able Skills will teach you to a standard which will see you confident in your Bricklaying skills and competent as a bricklayer, all you need to do is practice to build on your speed and gain your own techniques. In addition to the hands on training and knowledge, we also provide training on all of the NVQ units which make up a full Bricklaying NVQ Level 2 award.

At Able Skills we are able to provide you with this NVQ training but at the same time incorporate a City & Guilds 6217-07 Bricklaying qualification.

This City & Guilds qualification will act as your underpinning knowledge and will incorporate many of the areas which make up NVQ units so you will be learning all of the time.

This particular award is incredibly hands on and will provide you with plenty of Bricklaying knowledge and confidence and will go a huge way to preparing you for the industry.

We will also ensure you have a full understanding of portfolio building and evidence gathering.
The C&G qualification alone is not enough basis for the NVQ process which is why we provide an additional 2 weeks Bricklaying training, should this be your choice.

As well as an abundance of practical training, we will provide you with a learner pack for study at your own leisure.

This learning pack will cover every area required to complete the Bricklaying NVQ units and will be something that you can retain for years to come.

QUA 713 – Trowel Occupations - NVQ Level 2

And Finally………

As the next 2 units are the 2 mandatory units for a Bricklaying NVQ, we will use the 2 extra weeks to assess the necessary competencies required to achieve:

VR40 Erect Masonry Structures

This unit is about: – interpreting information – adopting safe and healthy working practices – selecting materials, components and equipment – preparing and erecting brickwork and blockwork and/or vernacular style structures

VR41 Set Out Masonry Structures

This unit is about: – interpreting information – adopting safe and healthy working practices – selecting materials, components and equipment – setting out brickwork and blockwork and/or vernacular style structures on level ground.

There are also 2 optional units to be achieved in order to complete the full Bricklaying NVQ level 2 award. We will cover all of these subjects throughout your training time so that you are prepared, once working within the Bricklaying industry, for any eventuality.

  • VR42 Erect Masonry Cladding
  • VR43 Lay Domestic Drainage
  • VR44 Erect Thin Joint Masonry Structures
  • VR45 Place and Finish Non-specialist Concrete
  • VR46 Plaster and Render Surfaces
  • VR47 Maintain Slate and Tile Roofing
  • VR50 Repair and Maintain Masonry Structures

Once you have completed your 8 weeks of intensive, hands on Bricklaying training, you will then be industry ready which is where you need to be in order to achieve an NVQ.
To achieve the NVQ you must be registered with an NVQ Assessment Centre and assessed in the work place, on your Bricklaying competencies.

Able Skills will register you under our Centre, free of charge.

Our training has been developed to help you fully understand how to gather work based evidence, how to enlist the help of an on site recorder, how to record photographic evidence and so on.

To finish this training experience, we will provide you with a start up portfolio which will include all of the evidence and assessment sheets ready for you to use as and when you gather your work based evidence. We will also continually support you throughout the process and if you choose, we will check your portfolio evidence to ensure that you are on the right track.

When and if work based assessments are required, we will arrange for our Assessors to visit you at your place of work for on site assessments.

If you complete all of the NVQ units required and have provided evidence of this, Able Skills own Assessors and Internal Verifiers will make a decision on the portfolios completeness and eligibility for an NVQ.
