C&G 2394-2395-2396

C&G 2391: Inspection, Testing and Certification of Electrical Installations - Replacement Qualifications:

• C&G 2394 Initial Verification of Electrical Installations
• C&G 2395 Periodic Inspection, Testing and Reporting of Electrical Installations
• C&G 2396 Design of Electrical Installations

Changes are afoot again and this time the City & Guilds 2391 is the qualification which has been looked at and changed to fall in line with the QCF - Qualification Credit Framework.

The existing suite of 2391 qualifications will be replaced by the following qualifications:

C&G 2394 Level 3 - Initial Verification of Electrical Installations
C&G 2395 Level 3 - Periodic Inspection, Testing and Reporting of Electrical Installations
C&G 2396 Level 4 - Design of Electrical Installations

The exact titles for these qualifications are yet to be confirmed but the above titles do give an indication of the content.

All of the above qualifications are due to launch on November 26th 2011 and will be written in line with BS 7671:2008(2011)

How the new qualifications will be assessed

C&G 2394 will be assessed by:

• One practical assignment (set by City & Guilds and marked by the centre)
• One knowledge test, details TBC.

C&G 2395 will be assessed by:

• One practical assignment (set by City & Guilds and marked by the centre)
• One dated entry question paper, which will be available on a set number of dates throughout the year and marked by City & Guilds.

C&G 2396 will be assessed by:

• One assignment project (set by City & Guilds and marked by the centre)

• One dated entry question paper, which will be available on a set number of dates throughout the year, externally marked by City & Guilds.

The new qualification handbooks, including the syllabus and test specifications etc will be available by October 2011 and then we will be in a better position to advise on course content, duration and price etc.

What will happen to the current C&G 2391 qualification?

The current C&G 2391 closes for new registrations on 31 December 2011, with a final certification date of 31 December 2013. However, dated entry (theory examinations) examinations will only continue to be available until the summer of 2012 - the exact final date of the 301 and 303 examinations are yet to be confirmed.

Effectively this means that if you are already registered onto the C&G 2391, you will only have until summer 2012 to pass the theory. Exams set for 2012 for unit 301 of the C&G 2391 are currently advertised as:

• 09th February 2012
• 15th March 2012
• 14th June 2012
• 12th July 2012
• 09th August 2012

Which version of the regulations should candidates apply knowledge of?

Until 31 December 2011, candidates undertaking 2391 assessments may answer to either the 2008 (red book) or 2011 (green book) version of the regulations. From 1 January 2012, candidates must answer in line with the 2011 1st amendment only.

Mapping C&G 2391 units to achievement of the C&G 2394, C&G 2395 or C&G 2396

It is not anticipated that candidates who hold C&G 2391 units will be able to use these towards the new qualifications. Candidates who have achieved one of the 2391 units but not completed the full qualification should ensure they complete the remaining unit prior to the final certification date.

Again, please note that the 2391-301 and 2391-303 exams are not likely to continue beyond mid-2012, although this may be reconsidered subject to demand with a reduced number of examinations per year being put into play.

As soon as we have more information on the proposed changes we will let you know by writing 3 separate pages dedicated to the new qualifications.
