6 Week Hands-On Combined Carpentry & Joinery Course

Have you considered learning aspects of both carpentry and joinery but do not want to undertake a qualification? If so, this may be the course or you.

This 6 weeks of hands on ‘reality’ training will cover all of the basic and essential skills that any Carpenter/Joiner will need in order to provide a competent service to any potential customer.

Carpenters are frequently considered to be amongst the most important trade within the construction industry and working in this industry can be very rewarding which is why we are offering you the opportunity to perfect your skills and learn to be a very skilled Carpenter/Joiner but without the paperwork and certificates which qualifications provide.

Our Carpentry Training Centre is probably the biggest and best equipped in the UK. The centre has 2 full time Carpentry instructors who are both trade qualified, time served and additionally, have the required qualifications to allow them to teach these particular courses.

They offer complete guidance and training on every aspect of the course and will also deliver additional trade relevant Carpentry training if you have any time left.

Qualifications are not for everyone and so this course has been put together for those of you who just want to come in and get on with learning both the carpentry and joinery trade.

This 6 weeks of hands on carpentry training will see you progress from a novice to a competent Carpenter/Joiner with the course designed to build your skills gradually until various aspects of carpentry and joinery becomes second nature and at this Centre where ‘reality’ is important, this is easily achieved.

We will provide you with training and assessment in several areas of Carpentry covering first fix aspects like cutting and laying floor joists and fixing door linings as well as second fix aspects such as hanging doors and fitting skirtings and architraves etc.

From a joinery point of view we will provide you with an understanding of how to construct and assemble various commonly used joints.

The emphasis for us is on meeting and exceeding our customers’ expectations and so Able Skills Carpentry Centre has been carefully designed to cover all areas of Carpentry and Joinery with designated training areas for designated carpentry aspects, assessment areas for those undertaking qualifications, bench areas, power tool area and a classroom.

This is all in a very open plan setting so that everyone can see everything that is going on, giving you much more of an insight into what can be achieved should you want to progress even further in your carpentry career.

Carpentry & Joinery Course Structure, times and fees

This course can be covered over a period to suit you. You can train for 6 consecutive weeks, divide your weeks up or even incorporate some weekend training if you have ongoing weekly commitments.

At Able Skills we aim to make our training as accessible as is possible and additionally we offer a payment plan which, following a deposit, is on a pay as you train basis. For more details on Able Skills pay as you train offer please contact us.

This is a hands-on, practical course, it is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential. All other PPE, tools and materials will be provided throughout your training period.

Guidance on choosing the right training centre

We are aware that there are many Training Centres in the UK offering a variety of carpentry related courses and City and Guilds qualifications and we would advise caution when you are ready to book courses of this nature.

We recommend that you confirm the Training Centres City & Guilds Registration number and also that you enquire as to the qualifications of their staff.

In order for your Carpentry Qualification course to run swiftly and smoothly, you should ensure that your chosen training centre has qualified Instructors, Assessors and Internal Verifiers. Better still, visit the centre and view the staff’s qualifications as well as the facilities available.

You should be allowed access to see the training areas, chat to instructors, have access to past student feedback forms and additionally, chat to existing students.

Check if the course will be completed solely at the training centre or whether you are actually also being sold ‘home study’ units.

Lastly, confirm the timings of your course. If your intended course is to be achieved in blocks then be sure that you can return to train at a time of your choice and that you will not be left waiting for months on end to get back in.

This 6 week carpentry and joinery course will provide you with in depth training to cover 7 areas of essential carpentry AND 9 areas of essential joinery.

Even though you will not be going through a qualification process your progress will be consistently assessed by our qualified carpentry and joinery instructors, giving you the same benefits as someone who might be training with us for qualification purposes.

The areas in which you will be trained on are:

Carpentry:

•    Fixing Skirting to a timber background
•    Fixing floor joists and laying flooring
•    Fixing door lining in stud partition or blockwork opening
•    Hanging an internal door
•    Fixing and stabilising trussed rafters
•    Setting out and cutting one pair of common rafters
•    Operating basic wood machines

Joinery:

•    Constructing through mortice and tenon
•    Constructing stub mortice and tenon
•    Constructing haunched mortice and tenon
•    Constructing centre bridle joint
•    Constructing dovetail halving joint
•    Constructing through dovetail
•    Constructing double mortice and tenon
•    Constructing shouldered housing
•    Constructing slot dovetail

6 Week Hands-On Carpentry & Joinery Course Fees and Payment Plan

At Able Skills we try to make our courses as affordable as possible. The cost for this 6 weeks Hands On Carpentry course is £1995 (inc vat). We require a £500 deposit to secure a start date and the remaining balance can be spread over the 6 week training period.

This is a hands-on, practical course, it is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential. All other PPE, tools and materials will be provided throughout your training period.

Other Carpentry Options

As the industry relating to Carpentry is so varied, there are other options available to you at Able Skills. You could consider a 5 day Introductory Carpentry Course or the same course but over weekends or maybe some Kitchen Fitting.

If you enjoy a short course and decide you would like to pursue a Carpentry career, Able Skills will upgrade you to a City & Guilds course, taking into account the time and money you have already spent with us.

If you would like to gain qualifications then we would recommend an 8 week QCF Carpentry Diploma or 10 weeks for the Diploma and NVQ training or even a CAA 6 week Diploma
