City & Guilds 2399-12 - Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
Able Skills has gradually been implementing training courses which will fall in line with the Governments drive on protecting and enhancing the environment and tackling climate change and we are now at the stage where we have been able to open a dedicated Renewable Technology training centre.
About Solar Photovoltaic Systems
Solar Photovoltaic (PV) is a type of renewable energy technology that is capable of converting light into electrical current, this electricity can then be used in your home.
PV panels are wired to an inverter which converts the generated electricity from Direct Current (DC) into usable Alternating Current (AC) for use in your home. The Solar PV system is connected to the electrics in your house and therefore to the National Grid.
This means that any surplus electricity produced by the system that is not needed in your home can be exported back to the grid. Similarly when the system is not providing enough power for your home, you can import the amount you need back from the grid.
Solar PV operates on light from the sun which means that whenever there is light available, the system will be generating electricity. The system will produce electricity all year round but the output will fluctuate seasonally, with the most electricity being produced in the bright summer months when there is a greater amount of direct sunlight available.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) sees PV systems as an essential part of Government energy policy and supports the recognition of qualified personnel within this initiative. There is now a huge drive towards this kind of renewable energy which will contribute to lowering emissions.
PV systems generate no greenhouse gases; a typical domestic system can save approximately 1.2 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year.
Training as a PV Installer
Training and Assessment to achieve this award is intended for qualified and/or practicing electricians who will be required to install grid connected domestic photovoltaic systems that are either integrated into, or retro onto, a domestic dwelling.
This course is for qualified electricians holding N/SVQ 3 in Electrical Installation (Buildings and Structures) or equivalent earlier certification that provides evidence of competence. In addition, BS 7671: 2008 Requirements for Electrical Installations (17th Edition) Certification.
This Electrical course and award has been designed to offer specific skills and knowledge to electricians to ensure they are conversant with Regulations and Code of Practice related to Photovoltaic (PV) systems and also offers an overview of other current environmental technologies.
This 7 day course will provide you with the training and assessment to ensure that you have the skills to install, commission & handover small scale grid connected domestic photovoltaic systems as well as have the skills to promote a system of maintenance.
Both theory and practical training takes place within Able Skills purpose built Environmental Technologies Training Centre which has been approved by the National Skills Academy to form part of the NSA Hub - The accredited training network for environmental technologies.

City & Guilds 2399-12 - Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
City & Guilds are the leading provider of accredited qualifications in the UK and are always at the forefront of new technical training with industry recognised qualifications which applies to this PV System qualification. This qualification will allow candidates to be recognised as competent in the field of Solar PV Systems and play a vital role in the use of renewable energy as this market continually grows.
MCS
Microgeneration-Certification Scheme (MCS) and Competent Person Scheme Providers
The purpose of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme is to evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria providing greater protection for consumers.
This scheme has the approval from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, industry and non-governmental groups as a prime method for making a substantial contribution to cutting the UK's dependency on fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions.
To join a MCS "Microgeneration Certificate Scheme" an appropriate and recognised PV System qualification must be held. In order to achieve this, it is expected that candidates applying to undertake this qualification have appropriate qualifications related to electrical installation, knowledge of the IEE Wiring Regulations and inspection and testing.
The award is designed to offer specific skills and knowledge to electricians to ensure they are conversant with the Regulations and Codes of Practice related to PV systems.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supports the recognition of qualified personnel within this field and sees PV systems as an essential part of the Government energy policy.
The introduction of Feed in Tariffs (FITs), the government backed support measure, has been designed to increase the uptake of Microgeneration and help deliver the UK's 2020 renewable energy targets. FITs provide those generating renewable energy with 20 year - or 25 years for Solar PV - guaranteed per unit support payments (p/kWh) for electricity generation.
City & Guilds 2399-12 - Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Small Scale Solar Photovoltaic Systems
This 7 day course requires both classroom and practical training and assessment. Candidates are required to wear safety boots but all other PPE requirements are provided by Able Skills for use throughout the course.
