About Heat Pump Systems
Heat Pump technology provides builders and home owners with an alternative source of energy for their heating and hot water demands. New heat pump technology has now produced pumps which can be marketed as direct boiler replacements.
Ground source heat provides a new and clean way of heating buildings in the UK, they use pipes buried in the garden to extract heat stored in the ground, providing one of the most energy-efficient ways of heating buildings.
Beneath the surface, the ground stays at a constant temperature, so a ground source heat pump can be used throughout the year - even in the middle of winter.
This is usually used to warm water for radiators or underfloor heating systems. It can also be used to pre-heat water before it goes into a more conventional boiler. The only energy used by Ground Source Heat Pump systems is electricity to power the pumps.
Typically, a Ground Source Heat Pump will deliver 3 or 4 times as much thermal energy (heat) as is used in electrical energy to drive the system.
Air Source Heat Pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to warm water for radiators or underfloor heating systems, or to warm the air in your home. These systems use similar principles to ground source heat pumps to extract heat from the air instead of the ground.
Air source heat pumps can be fitted outside a house or in the roof space and generally perform better at slightly warmer air temperatures.This technology goes a long way towards providing a carbon friendly solution to heating the home and the provision of domestic hot water.
This Heat Pump course will provide the installer with the confidence and practical knowledge to become a qualified Heat Pump installer. This is also recognised towards your MCS approval.
Training as a Heat Pump Installer
Those of you intending to undertake Training and Assessment to achieve this award should hold a G3 certificate in domestic unvented hot water systems , Energy efficiency , Water regulations and NVQ level 2 in plumbing and heating or 2 years industry experience
The purpose and aim of this quaification is to enable learners to develop the underpinning knowledge required for assessment of occupational competence and delivers the knowledge required to plan and prepare for, install (including testing and commissioning) and handover of heat pump system installations as well as offer a system of maintenance.
The qualification focuses upon systems up to 45kW load and include air source, water source and ground source systems. The unit covers fundamental heat pump system design awareness and component selection as well as covering connection to collector loops and the fundamental requirements of collector loop design and installation.
The qualification also covers the requirements for appropriate personnel competence as required by The Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2008, in relation to heat pump work but the unit does not cover aspects of heat pump work that involves handling fluorinated greenhouse gases or
working on the heat pump refrigerant circuit.
Both theory and practical training takes place within Able Skills purpose built Environmental Technologies Training Centre which has been approved by the National Skills Academy to form part of the NSA Hub - The accredited training network for environmental technologies.

MCS
Microgeneration-Certification Scheme (MCS) and Competent Person Scheme Providers
The purpose of the Microgeneration Certification Scheme is to evaluate microgeneration products and installers against robust criteria providing greater protection for consumers.
This scheme has the approval from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, industry and non-governmental groups as a prime method for making a substantial contribution to cutting the UK's dependency on fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions.
To join a MCS "Microgeneration Certificate Scheme" an appropriate and recognised Heat Pump Systems qualification must be held. It is expected that candidates have appropriate qualifications to undertake Training and Assessment to achieve this award and so should hold a G3 certificate in domestic unvented hot water systems. It is also essential that candidates hold an NVQ level 2 or equivalent plumbing qualification.
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) supports the recognition of qualified personnel within this field and sees Heat Pump systems as an essential part of the Government energy policy.
2399-32 - Level 3 Award in the Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems (Non-refrigerant circuits)
This 5 day course requires both classroom and practical training and assessment. Candidates are required to wear safety boots but all other PPE requirements are provided by Able Skills for use throughout the course.

This course is for practicing installers and will provide you with the skills and knowledge to select the most appropriate heat pump for a building and to install any of the common types of ground source or air source heat pumps in a safe manner. It also provides training in the maintenance and servicing of heat pumps.
BPEC Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems Course
Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems has for many years been known as Unvented or G3 certification however the new Approved Document to Part G of the Building Regulations now applies to ALL domestic hot water storage systems. This course is for installers who wish to install Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems and join a Competent Persons’ Scheme which will allow the self-certification of installations.

Able Skills properties are licensed HMO (Houses in Multiple Occupation) and are fully equipped in line with local authority standards.
The properties will provide you with your own fully furnished room with washing facilities and TV. There are several bathrooms/WCs as well as fully fitted kitchens and a dining areas to eat and/or meet your fellow students.
Able Skills employs someone to maintain the properties on a regular basis and also to ensure that the property is being looked after by those staying.

This enables you to leave your vehicle in a safe and secure environment and make that short walk to whichever course you are attending.
