6/7 Week Professional Multi-Skills Course

Able Skills can offer you the opportunity to obtain a City & Guilds Diploma (6218-04) covering 3 construction subjects, enabling you to become a City & Guilds qualified Multi Skilled tradesman.

This qualification will confirm competence in each of the chosen subjects and successful candidates will receive a City & Guilds Diploma certificate and will also have a completed portfolio to demonstrate to potential employers capability in the tasks undertaken.

To achieve the full Diploma, candidates must successfully complete all units from three of the following occupations.

You will be able to choose 3 subjects from

•    Plumbing
•    Bricklaying
•    Plastering
•    Carpentry
•    Painting & Decorating

This multi skills course is an intensive 6 or 7 weeks of hands on training, during which time you will build a portfolio of your work. You can train for 6 or 7 consecutive weeks or divide your weeks up.

At Able Skills we aim to make our qualifications as accessible as possible and additionally we offer a payment plan which, following a deposit is on a pay as you train basis.

You will work through a portfolio covering the required units in each of your chosen subjects and you will receive training and assessment on those units.

Able Skills has dedicated training centres for each of the disciplines so you can be assured that the instructor you will have for each subject is someone who is an expert in his trade. This instructor will also guide you through portfolio completion and will explain in full the assessment processes which will take place.

Each centre is fully equipped with all of the tools and materials you will need to complete this award as well as access to reference books to aid you with any written portfolio requirements.

With the current facilities we have available to us, we can comfortably cater for all of the above construction trades and more. Whether your interest is in Bricklaying, Carpentry, Plastering, Plumbing or Painting & Decorating, our facilities will exceed your expectations.

At present, the UK does not have enough Multi Skilled workers in the construction industry and we feel that this qualification will be your foot in the door to a career within Construction.

Carpentry: (2 week block period of training required)

Carpentry Training will be provided in:

•    Health & Safety and PPE
•    Use of hand tools such as chisels, planes etc.
•    Cutting basic joints
•    Cutting and fitting architraves and skirtings
•    Erecting a stud-wall
•    Fitting a door lining/frame
•    Hanging a door
•    Fixing floor joists and laying flooring

Carpentry Assessment will be undertaken in:

•    Developing Site Carpentry Skills
•    Developing Flooring Skills
•    Developing Partitioning Skills
•    Developing Hand Tool Maintenance Skills

Plumbing: (2 week block period of training required)

Plumbing Training will be provided in:

•    Health & Safety and PPE
•    Plumbing systems and fittings
•    Soldering techniques
•    Jointing, bending and pressure testing copper tube
•    Plumbing pipe work
•    Copper pipe work skills
•    Valves, taps, cisterns, and cylinders
•    Plastic Tube installation
•    Bathroom installation
•    Soil and waste pipes

Plumbing Assessment will be undertaken in:

•    Introducing rain water goods
•    Introducing pipework skills
•    Developing Pipework Skills
•    Developing Skills in Fitted Interiors
•    Expanding Pipework Skills

Bricklaying: (2 week block period of training required)

Bricklaying Training will be provided in:

•    Health & Safety and PPE
•    How to set out building lines
•    Brick and block work
•    How to ensure your walls are square and vertical
•    Build a corner, a pillar, a pier, a cavity wall
•    How to do pointing for face work
•    Demonstrate how to put in a damp course
•    Bricklaying bonds: English Bond - Flemish Bond - Stretcher Bond
•    Position lintels

Bricklaying Assessment will be undertaken in:

•    Developing Brickwork Skills
•    Developing Quoin Skills
•    Developing Blockwork Skills

Plastering & Tiling: (2 week block period of training required for Plastering, 1 week for Tiling)

Plastering Training will be provided in:

•    Health & Safety and PPE
•    To cut and fix plaster board to walls and ceilings
•    To tape standard and internal joints
•    To cut and fix angle beads around windows and reveals
•    To prepare surfaces before plastering using bonding plaster and finishing plaster, ensuring a flat finished surface ready for decorating
•    To mix plastering materials
•    To skim walls
•    To skim ceilings
•    To apply PVA adhesive Unibond to existing surfaces
•    Apply a scratch coat of render
•    Apply a top coat of render

Plastering Assessment will be undertaken in:

•    Introducing Finishing Skills
•    Developing Plastering Skills
•    Developing Rendering Skills
•    Introducing levelling in construction
•    Developing Tiling Skills

Tiling Training will be provided in:

•    Setting out your tiling work
•    Explaining all the different adhesives used for different surfaces
•    Demonstrating all the tools required
•    Cutting tiles using wet tile cutters, dry tile cutters, tile scribes, tile snips and tile saws
•    Explaining tiling involving Borders, Diamonds and Patterns
•    How to cut around windows and reveals
•    How to cope with tiling difficult areas such as uneven walls
•    How to tile angled ceilings and socket areas
•    How to tile splash-backs
•    How to tile around boxed in pipes

Tiling Assessment will be undertaken in:

•    Developing Tiling Skills

Painting & Decorating: (2 week block period of training required)

Painting & Decorating Training will be provided in:

•    Health & Safety and PPE
•    Correct use of tools and equipment used in this trade
•    Preparation of surfaces ready for painting
•    Repairing imperfections in walls and wood ready for painting
•    Application of water based products such as primers, undercoats, emulsion and eggshell using  brushes and rollers
•    Application of oil based products
•    Cutting around obstructions, openings, fittings such as radiators, windows, sockets and switches
•    How to use a roller effectively
•    Cutting, pasting and hanging wallpaper

Painting & Decorating Assessment will be undertaken in:

•    Developing Paint Finishing Skills
•    Developing Surface Preparation Skills
•    Developing Papering Skills

Summary

Each of the above listed assessment processes are allocated City & Guilds credits and we have structured this training programme to cover the most commonly required skills so that successful completion of any 3 subjects from the 5 listed will provide in excess of 37 credits which equate to the award of a City & Guilds Diploma.

This in itself could prove to be your passport into employment or self employment as a Multi-skilled trades person. As these courses are entirely hands on, you can gain a great insight into what each core subject entails and at a later stage you could consider specialising in a particular area.

We will ensure that we exceed the requirements of the qualification to ensure that you are given the opportunity to undertake a broad range of practical activities.

At Able Skills, each individual Instructor has a vast array of knowledge from having previously spent years working within their particular industry. Additionally, they have all achieved the required qualifications in order to teach, assess and verify all related coursework.

Whichever 3 subjects you choose, you can be guaranteed that the emphasis is placed on practical experience and so these courses are entirely hands on; It is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential. All tools and materials will be provided throughout your training period.

Due to the facilities and staff available at Able Skills, we are able to offer flexibility with this award. We do not require you to attend for a consecutive period of 6 or 7 weeks but we do require that each subject is covered in blocks of 2 or 3 weeks (as listed above). This is to ensure consistency and will enhance the learning process.

We feel confident that with the standard of staff and training we provide, you can complete this qualification in the stated 6 or 7 weeks. If however, there is some reason which leads to you requiring additional training, additional fees will be payable.
