City & Guilds Tiling Course

If you have undertaken Able Skills Intensive and/or Advanced Tiling courses, you may wish to consider this 5 day assessment process which will provide you with the opportunity to

•    Build a portfolio
•    Tile an area to City & Guilds specification and
•    Achieve a City & Guilds tiling unit accreditation

As a City & Guilds approved Construction Training Centre, Able Skills is in a position to take you through an assessment process to achieve a City & Guilds Tiling Certificate.

During this 5 day course you will be continually assessed and will be building a portfolio of photographic evidence which is yours to keep and present to potential employers or customers. It is advisable that you build on this existing portfolio as you undertake tiling projects, any evidence you gather may at a later stage contribute towards an NVQ.

As this is an Assessment process, it is vital that you have previous tiling experience or that you have attended Able Skills Intensive or Advanced tiling courses before you embark on this particular week of Tiling with us. In our dedicated Tiling Centre, we have the facilities to cover every aspect of Tiling! If after you have achieved the City & Guilds Tiling Certificate you decide that you may like to work towards achieving an NVQ, we can provide the training and the Assessment team to get you to that level of competence.

We try to make all training as accessible as possible to everyone so if you have weekly commitments but would still like to undertake this assessment process, we can provide this over 2 consecutive weekends.

Practical activities will enable the candidate to:

•    Prepare floor and wall to receive tiles.
•    Fix Straight edge and check for level.
•    Apply adhesives.
•    Fix tiles.
•    Apply Grouting.
•    Clean tools, equipment.

Underpinning knowledge will enable the candidate to:

•    State the health & safety implications of using powdered materials and ready mixed adhesives.
•    State the need for use of PPE and SSOW
•    Give reasons for levels and straight edges.
•    Identify types of tiles.
•    Give reasons for grouting.
•    Give reasons for gaps when applying tiles.
•    State the need for a clean and tidy work area.

This course also includes:

•    Setting out your tiling work,
•    Explaining all the different adhesives used for different surfaces
•    Demonstrating all the tools required.
•    Cutting tiles using wet tile cutters, dry tile cutters, tile scribes, tile snips and tile saws.
•    Explaining tiling involving Borders, Diamonds and Patterns
•    How to cut around windows and reveals
•    How to cope with tiling difficult areas such as uneven walls
•    How to tile around pipes, angled ceilings and socket areas.
•    How to tile splash-backs and
•    How to tile around boxed in pipes.

The certificate and portfolio obtained at the end of this week could enhance your employability status and provide you with the skills and confidence to a career in tiling.

If you are looking at a career change and want to become a full time Tiler, Able Skills also offers a 3 week tiling package incorporating a City & Guilds Unit Accreditation and 4 week tiling package incorporating training on Natural Stone Tiling.

If you are planning a career long term and are maybe considering a route to NVQ, Able Skills also offers you the opportunity to train for 6 weeks or 8 weeks. These longer training plans delve that little bit deeper into tiling and give you the opportunity to look at your technique, gain confidence and build speed.
