Part P Electrical Courses from Able Skills
With the introduction to a change in the building regulations, most electrical work in domestic dwellings must by law, be notified to the local authority building control. The exception to this is where the work is undertaken by a competent person who is a member of a Governing body and is registered onto a Part P Scheme.
A competent person is someone who is approved by one of the governing bodies approved by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, this is known as the Part P Scheme; the scheme does require that you can prove competency, and upon registering onto a scheme, you will be assessed by the governing body you choose.
To register onto a Part P scheme you are required to have knowledge of domestic installations and a relevant qualification which determines that you are competent and able to safely work on electrical equipment in the home.
Persons registered with the Part P Self-Certification Schemes will be qualified with the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for safety. They are required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate that complies with Building Regulation requirements when the work has been completed.
EAL VRQ Level 2 for Electrical Domestic Installers
Course Objective
Most individuals whether they be new entrants, time served electricians or those who now do electrical work as a small part of their activities opt for this course. The aim of the EAL VRQ Level 2 is to provide a much-needed qualification for the domestic electrical industry and introduce candidates to an essential range of skills. The objective of the award is to ensure that the industry has an appropriate qualification to encourage candidates into the domestic electrical industry.
This VRQ covers the necessary skills needed by those looking at changing careers to enter the domestic electrical sector and provides progression opportunities both to employment and to a range of other qualifications
The EAL Domestic Installer Scheme for Part P is a modular qualification comprising of 9 Units.
The assessment of this qualification has two aspects:
- External Assessment is a multi-choice examination written by EAL
- Internal Assessment which comprises a series of practical and/or knowledge tasks.
An assessor/course tutor will mark internal assessments and a sample of these will be internally verified by an individual responsible for the quality assurance of the qualification.
Candidates must pass both the external assessment and demonstrate adequate skills in the internal assessment components to achieve the qualification. Successful completion of both components will enable you to register as a Part P Installer.
The awarding body of this VRQ has worked closely with industry, colleges and training providers to ensure that the course content and assessments are pitched at the correct level and meet the needs of both candidates and industry.
The internal assessments have been designed to test either practical skills or knowledge which is why it is essential that you are competent in the following areas:
- Electrical Safety legislation, regulations standards and terminology
- Safe isolation procedures
- Identification of unsafe electrical situations
- Earthing and bonding requirements
- Electrical test procedures
- Cable and component selection
- Installation and replacement of electrical components
- Checking the correct and safe operation of installed electrical components
- Recording of electrical test results and completion of certification
- Installing and/or rerouting cables
- Special Locations
- New circuit requirements
- Lighting installations

If you feel that you are lacking in some or all areas, you will need to consider undertaking introductory training which is available at Able Skills by way of a 2 day or 5 day course – dependant upon your existing skills and knowledge.
