You may have heard about changes being proposed for City & Guilds training and also wondering how this might affect construction trade qualifications, especially if you are thinking of beginning your training with Able Skills on the City & Guilds 2330 - Technical Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology.
The new qualifications will replace the current ‘technical certificates' and NVQs at levels 2 and 3 for the Electrical industry but not until July 2012 which means that the current route of the C&G 2330 technical certificates remain valid qualifications and an acceptable route into the electrical industry.
So therefore, 2011 sees the introduction of 2 routes into the Electrical industry. The newly accredited C&G 2357 NVQ Diploma and separately, the already established C&G 2330 at both levels 2 and 3.
C&G 2330 Levels 2 and 3
Able Skills is offering you the opportunity to fast track to a career in the electrical industry and to achieve both the level 2 and level 3 Certificate in Electrotechnical Technology (2330) at a discounted package price.
These two training options will form 2 separate Electrical courses. The Level 2 Certificate will require 10 weeks of training and this will take place over a period of 20 weeks, the Level 3 will require 6 weeks of training and this will be completed over a period of 12 weeks.
The training pattern will require you to train for 2 weeks before taking a break for 2 weeks and then returning to the training centre to continue in the same pattern.
We are offering this discounted training package, so that you can be assured of a Level 3 place without having to wait for too long once level 2 is finished. These intensive courses will enable you to gain these electrical qualifications in a shorter period of time.
Electrical courses at Levels 2 and 3
The City & Guilds 2330 at level 2 is currently the recognised route into the electrical installation industry and will cover underpinning knowledge necessary for the industry.
It is suited to those of you wishing to gain in-depth technical knowledge as a route into the industry but equally, is also suitable for those of you already working in the electrical industry who require in-depth technical knowledge without completing an apprenticeship.
Level 2 is designed to provide and help develop regulation knowledge, practical skills and science required for electrical installation work; as the course progresses you will gain extensive knowledge of the theory of Electrics.
The City & Guilds 2330 at level 3 covers more advanced topics and is the natural progression and will prepare you for the industry in much more depth covering Electrical Science, Inspection & Testing procedures, Fault Diagnosis and Fault Rectification in preparation for City & Guilds 2391 should that be your next step.
The courses will also provide an understanding of the Health & Safety requirements governing electrical installation processes, and knowledge of the organisation and structure of the electrical industry within which these activities are carried out.
City & Guilds 2330 level 2
An 8 week course of intensive training - 50% of which is devoted to practical work - the 2330 Level 2 provides all the necessary foundation knowledge for entrants to undertake electrical work within Domestic, Industrial and Commercial premises.
The qualification covers all the basic principles of electrical installation and understanding of Health & Safety requirements and knowledge of the organisation and structure of the electrical industry.
The end registration date for this award has been extended by City & Guilds to July 2012 so this qualification remains valid and industry recognised and achievable at Able Skills.
City & Guilds 2330 level 3
A 5 week course of intensive training which is the natural progression from level 2 and is a requirement for moving forward to the next stage to obtain an Electrical NVQ
The end registration date for the 2330 at level 3 has been extended by City & Guilds to July 2012 so this qualification remains valid and industry recognised and achievable at Able Skills.
A £500 deposit will secure a start date and the balance can be spread over the training period, interest free. This combined package will provide you with a saving of £695.00 over booking the courses individually.

Training Facilities and Staff
As these qualifications require both practical workshop tasks as well as classroom based theory, we can assure you that everything is in place to meet your requirements.
Our Electrical training centre has designated training areas and classrooms for each electrical course we offer. We have allocated computer suites so that all online exams can be undertaken in exam conditions, without disruption.
Our practical training bays are equipped with training boards set to exceed specific City & Guilds requirements and all tools and materials are readily available for all of your electrical requirements.
All tools and materials will be organised and made readily available for you as and when you need them. We are not restricted by budget controls and so there will never be a time when you cannot complete a practical task due to lack of materials or tools.
We are keen to make this industry qualification experience as real as it can be so we meet and exceed the requirements set by City & Guilds to guarantee that you will not gain as much knowledge or skill as you can at Able Skills at any FE College or other training provider.
You will have the support of all of Able Skills qualified instructors. Each instructor at Able Skills has the relevant trade experience as well as teaching and assessing awards in order to ensure that your entire course is carried out in full at Able Skills.
This ensures that certification is immediate and without delay. In addition, our Electrical Technician Steve is a former Able Skills student who has undergone all of his Electrical training with us so he knows the course content and layout very well and will give you invaluable support.
We will also provide you with the recommended reference books required to complete both Level 2 and level 3 (2330) We would also recommend that you obtain a copy of IEE On-Site Guide, a scientific calculator and for the level 3, Guidance Notes 3 is recommended. You will also need safety boots which all students are required to wear when working in the electrical workshops.
During both courses, you will be assessed by practical assessments and assignments with external exams under the guidance of City & Guilds.
City & Guilds 2330 levels 2 and 3 are formal trade qualifications and are required in order for candidates to progress further in their electrical training/career. They can also be used for people who are looking to retrain and enter the electrical industry.
Alternatively, you may prefer to undertake study for the C&G 2357-13 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment
This particular qualification is new for 2011 and effectively combines the theory from the C&G 2330 levels 2 and 3 with the practical Onsite assessments of the NVQ 2356 along with an independent assessment more commonly known as AM 2. This training option is available at Able Skills on both a full time and part time basis.
If you have already achieved C&G 2330 Level 2 or C&G 2360 Part 1, you will only need to undertake C&G 2330 level 3 - Please visit the relevant page as this course is available as a standalone training option.
If once the level 2 and 3 have been achieved you choose to be assessed at your place of work to gain an NVQ or equivalent, you will need to enrol onto the C&G 2357. The units achieved in the C&G 2330 levels 2 and 3 will be taken into account. Please visit Transferring from 2330 to 2357 for more details.
C&G 2330 levels 2 and 3 - Course Timings:
The C&G 2330 level 2 has been allocated 8 weeks for completion and the C&G 2330 at level 3 has been allocated 5 weeks. Due to the intensity of these electrical courses, we have decided that a one week break between the level 2 and the level 3 should be allocated.
Able Skills is open 7 days every week and we welcome visitors at all times. Please feel free to come along to view our facilities, have an informal chat with any one of our instructors and meet existing students.
