City & Guilds 2356 - NVQ Level 3

City & Guilds 2356 (NVQ) level 3 has been replaced by City & Guilds 2357 - 13 Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment.

If you have been working as an Electrician but have never achieved the NVQ aspect (previously C&G 2356) there is still the opportunity for you to achieve this despite the qualifications being changed and renamed. You will not have to start all over again!

What to do to achieve the NVQ at level 3

The new C&G 2357 recognises the achievements of the C&G 2330 at levels 2 and 3 and if you have previously undertaken and successfully completed City & Guilds 2330 at levels 2 and 3 and are now looking to achieve your NVQ, this City & Guilds 2357 is your next step.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) recognises that a person's previous experience could contribute to a qualification. RPL is allowed and is sector specific.

City & Guilds has identified the connections to the 2357-13 Level 3 NVQ Diploma from the 2330 City & Guilds Certificates in Electrotechnical Technology, to enable candidates that have completed their technical certificates to progress onto this qualification, without having to repeat assessment of content they have already undertaken.

To achieve a C&G 2357 level 3 NVQ you will, as has always been the case, need site assessments but prior to this, you will need to undertake one unit from the C&G 2357 which relates to Environmental Technologies.

This is a new addition to full Electrical qualifications and can be completed at Able Skills in 5 days. Able Skills has a dedicated Renewable Technologies Training Centre which is part of the National Skills Academy Hub so you can be sure that we will meet the requirements of the C&G 2357 and much more.

We will register you onto the C&G 2357 qualification, complete this newly required unit and then arrange a profiling session in order to allocate you an NVQ Assessor. He will then discuss the requirements of the site log book, organise an assessment plan and get your work based visits underway.

About Performance units (NVQ)

This gives you the opportunity to demonstrate that you have the practical skills to do the job, at the same time meeting  the requirements of the relevant National Occupational Standards for identified activities. This work based evidence confirms your understanding of what is required by you to undertake Electrical work in a competent and safe manner. Evidence that can be sourced from the real working environment for Performance Units must be naturally occurring and can be generated by;

  • (Primarily) direct observation of performance in the workplace by a qualified assessor
  • Your reflective account of performance.
  • Your work plans and work based products e.g. diagrams, drawings, specifications, customer testimony, authorised & authenticated photographs / images and audiovisual records of work completed.
  • Some evidence from prior achievements that demonstrably match the requirements of the Performance Unit can be considered.
  • Testimony from an expert witness subject to the activity being assessed.

Where "Expert Witnesses" are used in the assessment process identified above they must be:

Sector competent individuals who can attest to the learner's performance in the workplace, they will need to demonstrate that they have relevant current knowledge of industry working practices and techniques and that  they have no conflict of interest in the outcome of their evidence.

All of the following Performance units will be assessed via observation and the development of a portfolio in a work based environment and will be assessed to the assessment criteria set out in the unit.

2357-311 - Applying Health and Safety legislation and working practices (Installing and Maintaining Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment)

2357-312 - Applying environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems
