Gas Safe Register Information - from Able Skills

Simply put, The Gas Safe Register is about safety and to make sure that gas appliances such as boilers, fires, ovens and hobs are installed, maintained and serviced safely. In order to ensure this process is adhered to, Gas Safe register Engineers need to be employed to carry out the work.

If someone other than a Gas Safe registered engineer does the gas work in your home, you could be risking the safety of your family and your property.

As an approved provider of Gas Training and Gas Assessment, Able Skills supports the changes that the new Gas Safe Register have implemented to monitor the Gas Industry.

Gas Safe Register will replace CORGI gas registration in Great Britain on 1 April 2009. It will be the official industry stamp for gas safety and will be overseen by The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) who are responsible for regulating gas safety in Great Britain.

From the 1 April 2009 you must be on the Gas Safe Register to legally carry out gas work and comply with the Gas Safety (Installation & Use) Regulations 1998.

www.gassaferegister.co.uk provides detailed guidance on the changes that have been made, how existing Engineers make the change from CORGI and how new Operatives are assessed and monitored.

The aim of the new register will be to provide clearly written rules of registration and a high level of service with new services and benefits designed to improve the registration scheme and promote gas safety.

Gas Safe Register

Gas Safe Register will:

  1. Raise public awareness of gas safety and the gas register.
  2. Manage inspection and enforcement.
  3. Provide technical support and standards updates to registered engineers.
  4. Provide facilities for the reporting of notifiable gas work.
  5. Lower cost of overall service.
  6. Increased demand for services.
  7. Renewal of registration on anniversary of registration.
  8. Technical standards update and technical alerts services.
  9. Magazine: Registered Gas Engineers.
  10. Consultation on significant changes.
  11. Mobile friendly phone numbers.
  12. Simple online application and renewal process.
  13. Straightforward complaints and appeals procedures.

Gas Safe Register is the new official stamp for gas safety in Great Britain and the message is; gas, safe, register – keep gas safe. The meaning is clear. A Gas Safe Register engineer is safe to work with gas.

Gas Safe Register will provide a service allowing engineers to report gas work that is notifiable under the Building Regulations.

Changes to Inspection and enforcement

Gas Safe Register will assess the competence of individual engineers by inspecting the gas work they have carried out. Inspections will be generated from data sources and not selected by the engineer. Each piece of work an engineer carries out is a potential candidate for inspection.

All registered engineers and businesses will have a risk profile that is made up of a range of factors. This will help Gas Safe Register to target inspection resources where we anticipate finding work that might be considered of higher risk.

A dedicated enforcement team will identify and pursue businesses and individuals that undertake gas work unregistered.
