The course is delivered over 2 days and has a nice balance between theory and practical experience of commissioning and setting up the heat pump and ground collector.

The core elements of the course provide participants with an understanding of the technical principles of heat pumps and the design and installation of Ground Source heat pump systems. The course is ideal for engineers looking to diversify in to GSHP installation.

The course looks at the market for GSHP and the environmental arguments for heat pumps identifying the advantages and disadvantages of this technology.

The course also includes associated issues such as customer sales, service, project costing and is often visited by guest speakers who are industry experts which allows delegates to gain snap shot of the current market and to ask questions about existing installations and projects.

This training course is ideal for potential installers of packaged heat pumps for the domestic sector however, this course is not for candidates without experience within the plumbing, heating or air conditioning industry.

This course is for candidates who have a number of years’ experience in plumbing or conventional heating engineering, hold a formal qualification at NVQ Level 3 in plumbing or heating engineering or are currently undertaking a course in plumbing or heating engineering, which will lead to a formal qualification.

The pre requisites for this course include:

•    Unvented Hot water systems certificate and
•    Plumbing level 2 qualification (6129 , 6189 or 6089)
•    or
•    Working towards an NVQ level 2 or 3 in Plumbing

Able Skills has their own accommodation available at £20 per night for those of you who are travelling longer distances to train with us.

Every candidate will receive a comprehensive printed manual containing the course material and review questions, practice examination questions will also be provided.

This course does not include training in refrigerant handling, plumbing and electrical work that may be required during heat pump installation or for the purposes of maintenance.

The course is delivered over 2 days and on the second day we have a guest speaker from the GSHP industry to discuss case studies and answer any questions generated over the span of the course.

The course is a mixture of theoretical knowledge, presentations and practical. On day two you will also be tested on the level of knowledge and competence achieved.

•    Sizing ground collectors
•    Groundworks
•    Heat pump cycle
•    GSHP Design & Installation
•    Purging and commissioning
•    Fault finding
•    GSHP specifications and uses
•    Industry overview
•    Heat distribution

Installers who successfully complete the course and pass the examination and practical assessment will be issued with a certificate by BPEC.

An installer who has passed the examination and can demonstrate the required level of practical experience may apply to become an EU Certified Heat Pump Installer as part of the Eucert scheme operated by the EHPA.  The course certificate will also be used as evidence of training for accreditation of installers within the UK MCS scheme.

Pre-Requisite training

If you do not currently satisfy the entry requirements for this BPEC accredited course, Able Skills can provide you with the required training to get you to this stage.

F-Gas (Safe handling of refrigerants)

Able Skills is able to provide F-gas training and assessment which is also suitable for operatives undertaking other refrigeration training and assessment categories. In addition, we will provide Brazing training as well as essential electrics such as Central Heating wiring, fault finding and Central Heating controls wiring

Plumbing

Able Skills provides training and assessment for City & Guilds 6129 levels 2 and 3 and City & Guilds 6089 level 2 (NVQ)

Electrical

Part P will be required when undertaking installation of heat pumps. Able Skills can provide you with a 10 day comprehensive course which will cover Domestic Installation as well as the EAL VRQ at Level 2 which will enable you to register onto a Part P scheme for the purposes of self certification.
