Heat Pump Courses

This BPEC course covers all types of heat pump installations, including:

•    Air to water installations
•    Air to air installations
•    Floor mounted distribution systems
•    Wall mounted split systems
•    Ground Source Heat Pumps

This is a National Certificate and is recognised for the purposes of MCS registration. The course provides the delegate with the relevant knowledge and confidence to install this technology. The delegate will be able to see and set up various heat pumps in our Renewable Technologies centre.

The equipment used is of a high specification and will ensure a comprehensive level of knowledge and confidence is achieved. The course is BPEC and GSHP association approved.

Through our partnership with Mitsubishi Electric UK, Able Skills can also provide delegates with a route to market for installations and the opportunity to become an approved installer of Mitsubishi Heat pumps with further ‘product specific’ training.

This Heat Pump technology provides builders and home owners with an alternative source of energy for their heating and hot water demands. New heat pump technology has now produced pumps which can be marketed as direct boiler replacements.

This technology goes a long way towards providing a carbon friendly solution to heating the home and the provision of domestic hot water.

Heat pump technology uses a refrigeration cycle to produce useable heat, Able Skills therefore advise anyone wishing to service and maintain heat pumps to consider doing the F-gas II course which will give them the relevant qualifications to handle the refrigerants.

This technology is ideally linked in to hot water and under floor heating as the distribution medium, due to its low operating temperature.

The course pre-requisites are:

•    Plumbing level 2 qualification or working towards NVQ level 2
•    Unvented Hot Water Systems Certificate
•    Equivalent Industry experience in the plumbing and heating industry

For Anyone already holding the BPEC Ground Source Heat Pump Certificate, we also offer a half day course to ‘upgrade’ the GSHP Certificate to include Air Source. Please contact us for further details if required.

The BPEC Heat Pumps course is taught at our Renewable Technologies Centre, the course modules cover:

•    Environmental issues, background and advances in GSHP & ASHP
•    Main types of GSHP/ASHP systems
•    Site surveying and identification
•    System Design
•    Heat loss calculations for heat pumps
•    Installation methods
•    Commission systems
•    Fault finding and rectification
•    Servicing requirements for GSHP/ASHP systems
•    Legislation around refrigerant handling

At Able Skills Renewable Technologies Centre we have a large array of heat pumps which we can utilise for various exercises and fault finding tasks. We also have exploded views of actual heat pumps to aid identification of key components and therefore identification of the relevant circuits such as:

•    Refrigerant circuit
•    Heat distribution
•    Collector circuit

All of our pumps are working units and have programmable controls to replicate a complete installation.

Through our unique Christianni teaching system we can also demonstrate heat pump efficiency gains through pre heating the collector circuit with solar or alternative renewable sources. Please see our mobile renewable training rigs for more details.
