Social housing improvement fund created

A fund totalling £84 million has been set up to insulate social homes and consequently reduce fuel bills.
The money, which has been provided by the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), will help 46 areas of the country improve wall insulation.
Entitled the Social Housing Energy Saving Programme, it is hoped that 110,000 homes could be helped.
Sir Bob Kerslake, chief executive of the HCA, said: "Housing is responsible for more than a quarter of carbon emissions and this funding has come at a time when the need to tackle climate change has never been greater."
Housing minister John Healey added that making homes more energy efficient was a "priority for government".
It is thought that homes in London will benefit the most as the majority of social houses are in flats.
Mr Healey added that it was "clear" that the UK had to "make
existing housing stock greener" as many of the homes people will be living in in 50 years time have already been constructed.
