Importance of approved electrical qualifications highlighted by book recall
Published: 12/01/2010
Electrical work should only be tackled by tradespersons who have taken approved electrician training courses, it has been suggested, after the US Consumer Product Safety Commission recalled a range of home improvement books.
Six DIY titles, published under the Lowe's and Sunset brand names, were demanded be taken off the shelves by the American body due to incorrect wiring instructions potentially putting the reader at risk of electrocution.
Reports state that no injuries have been caused to date as a result of the books' wrong guidelines.
A spokesperson from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers told QMI Agency, for canoe.ca, that any DIY jobs of this kind should be left to the professionals.
"Electrical work is obviously very tricky," he said.
"Overall we do encourage people to use certified contractors and licensed electricians whenever possible."
The recalled books have been available for sale since January 1975 and include the AmeriSpec Home Repair Handbook, Lowes Complete Home Wiring and the Sunset Home Repair Handbook.
