Able Skills has their own accommodation available at £20 per night for those of you who are travelling longer distances to train with us.
Able Skills have previously devised various comprehensive training packages to cover the requirements of domestic installations which have provided students with the required skills and qualifications to move forward, register for Part P onto competent persons schemes and move on to enjoy a successful and safe career undertaking domestic installations.
To progress individuals that little bit further, we have now devised accredited courses which will meet the criteria as listed above but will also enable the individual to undertake an additional career within the Renewable Technologies industry – specifically Solar Photovoltaic.
Renewable Technology and the ability to generate power by natural means is most definitely the way that the UK is moving forward. Solar Photovoltaic (PV) ticks all of the boxes for the UK Government whose drive on carbon emission reduction is at the forefront of every debate and news item.
Solar PV installations take energy from the sun to generate electricity to power appliances and lighting; this in turn reflects on reduced electricity bills and coupled with the Feed In Tariffs, which entitle PV customers to receive payments for every single unit of electricity produced and an additional payment for any surplus electricity fed back into the grid, makes PV an all round good investment.
PV installation, commissioning and maintenance requires an individual to have a sound electrical background but not necessarily a full blown Electricians qualification so the possibilities are there for career changers and new entrants to the industry to have a role in this growing ‘Green’ industry.
Able Skills has put together a series of comprehensive courses for those of you who would like to embark on a career as a Renewable Engineer. These courses will take you on a journey of Electrical installation training, Wiring Regulations training, Inspection and Testing training, Health & Safety training and Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) training.
This is not a quick fix package as we recommend that the training is done at the right pace with mandatory Competent Persons scheme registration undertaken at the relevant point so that all Certificating bodies pre-requisites are adhered to.
The aim for Able Skills is to produce competent and safe installers of Photovoltaic systems who can fully understand the requirements of the various incentive schemes and whose customers can benefit from financial payback on their investments.
This series of courses will allow you a direct route in to the Solar PV marketplace.
The solar PV installers package consists of:
1. Introductory in to electrics
2. EAL VRQ Level 2 - Part P Certificate
3. C&G 2382 17th Edition
4. C&G 2392 Inspection and Testing
5. NICEIC Health & Safety Certificate
6. NICEIC Solar PV systems
7. MCS workshop

EAL VRQ Level 2 for Part P Competence – 5 Days
Anybody who is looking to undertake electrical work within a domestic dwelling will benefit from this particular course.
The aim of the EAL VRQ Level 2 is to provide a much-needed qualification for the domestic electrical industry and introduce candidates to an essential range of skills to encourage them into the domestic electrical industry.
This EAL VRQ Level 2 covers the necessary skills needed by those looking at changing careers to enter the domestic electrical sector and provides progression opportunities both to employment and to a range of other qualifications.
The awarding body of this VRQ has worked closely with industry, colleges and training providers to ensure that the course content and assessments are pitched at the correct level and meet the needs of both candidates and industry.
The EAL Domestic Installer Scheme for Part P is a modular qualification comprising of 9 Units:
• Applicable Building Regulations for Domestic Electrical Installation
• Electrical Safety Legislation, Regulations, Standards and Terminology
• Domestic Electrical Circuit Installation
• Installing Domestic Lighting Circuits
• Domestic Electrical Earthing and Bonding Requirements
• Inspecting, Testing and Commissioning Single Phase Domestic Electrical Circuits
• Special Locations and Installations Including Kitchens
• Domestic Electrical Installation Pre-Work Survey / Inspection
• Basic Understanding of 3 Phase
This qualification builds on the training received during the Introductory to Domestic Electrics course and is effectively an assessment of domestic electrical competence.
At this stage you are ready to register onto a Part P Competent Persons scheme although you can undertake C&G 2382 / 2392 beforehand if you want to develop your confidence and understanding of electrical installations and inspection & testing.
C&G 2382: 17th Edition – Wiring Regulations – 3 Days
This course is intended to ensure that upon completion, individuals are conversant with the format, content and the application of the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671: 2008 (17th edition).
This course is entirely classroom based, it introduces the regulations and covers their application through explanation and worked examples. The purposes, structure and content of the IEE On-Site Guide will also be covered and delegates will appreciate how to use this in support of the BS 7671.
The course consists of classroom instruction and culminates in a multiple choice, open book, online exam covering the underpinning knowledge relating to the content and application of BS 7671 17th Edition.
There are eight units making up the course relating to Parts 1-7 and the Appendices of BS 7671:2008:
• Scope, object and fundamental principles.
• Assessment of general characteristics
• Protection for safety
• Selection and erection of equipment
• Inspection and testing
• Special installations or locations
C&G 2392 – Fundamental Inspection & Testing – 4 Days
This qualification has been developed in conjunction with the electrical industry to provide less experienced candidates with an introduction of how to inspect and test (conduct the initial verification) of electrical installations.
During the course candidates learn how to carry out inspection and testing using various training rigs simulating real electrical installations and are given the opportunity to perform the inspection, testing and verification on an individual basis.
The course is delivered with both practical and theoretical electrical training to ensure that all underpinning knowledge requirements are supported by frequent practical activities.
• Preparation for initial inspection and testing
• Electrical Inspection
• Electrical Testing
Assessment will be by a 50 question multiple choice online test covering the underpinning knowledge relating to the fundamental inspection, testing and initial verification of electrical installations, as required by BS 7671:2008 and a practical test covering the range of inspections, tests, verification and recording of information and results for a new electrical installation, as required by BS 7671:2008
At this stage it is recommended that you have registered onto a Part P Competent Persons scheme as this is a pre-requisite for eligibility for the NICEIC PV course. Once this has been done, you will be able to move onto the next stage of this training package
