Part P for 2013
There are plans to change the criteria for individuals wanting to register (on to Competent Persons Schemes) for the purpose of self-certificating electrical work undertaken in Domestic Dwellings.
These changes will require individuals to meet a particular level of competency and related qualification at level 3 in order to register as a Qualified Supervisor and are not suitable for the majority of new entrants to the Domestic Electrical industry HOWEVER, these changes have currently been deferred until the Summer 2013 so for the foreseeable future, Able Skills will continue to provide suitable courses which are more than sufficient in order for you to register for Part P self-certification and once you are registered, you will not be required at a later date to meet any new qualification criteria.
We have devised combination packages to provide the minimum requirements for Part P registration, if you would like to learn more and gain additional relevant qualifications, please visit
Domestic Electrical Installation Course for New Entrants at a cost of £1145.00 or
Introduction to Domestic Electrics with 17th Edition at a cost of £1495.00
Alternatively, if you do not want to register on to a Competent Persons scheme, you have the option to arrange for any work undertaken to be certified under the guidance of Local Authority Building Control or via a Third Party Certification Scheme.
Able Skills offers various training packages to cover the requirements of domestic installation and at the end the courses, students will have a sufficient level of competence so that once registered with a Part P Governing body, they will be able to work safely, efficiently and legally on electrical equipment.
With the introduction to a change in the building regulations came the need by law, for most electrical work in domestic dwellings to be notified to the local authority building control. The exception to this is where the work is undertaken by a competent person who is a member of a Governing body and is registered onto a Part P Scheme.
A competent person is someone who is approved by one of the governing bodies approved by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, this is known as the Part P Scheme; the scheme does require that you can prove competency, and upon registering onto a scheme, you will be assessed by the governing body you choose.
Persons registered with the Part P Self-Certification Schemes will be qualified with the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for safety. They are required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate that complies with Building Regulation requirements when the work has been completed.
Part P for 2013
The changes to the qualification criteria for registration on to a Part P scheme will be enforced sooner or later and Able Skills welcomes the changes but in the meantime, we will continue to provide quality training to ensure that any individual leaving us following electrical training, will do so with a comprehensive understanding of how to undertake various electrical tasks and installations competently and safely. The courses that we have devised can be viewed at Domestic Electrical Installation Course for New Entrants and Introduction to Domestic Electrics with 17th Edition. In the meantime, here are some brief details of what the courses entail:
Introduction to Domestic Electrics with 17th Edition incorporates:
10 Day Introductory to Electrics
In order to reach your full potential and fully meet the requirements of the Part P scheme, practical abilities will be required to be updated and an understanding of terminology and basic electrical theory demonstrated.
Whether you have a non electrical background or have limited electrical knowledge, we can provide the required training to bring you up to speed by way of a 10 day training course.
We have devised this practical Electrical course for those of you wishing to learn electrics to become a Domestic Installer, but who have little prior knowledge or experience of domestic electrical installation and wiring of circuits.
This course covers all the commonly used domestic wiring circuits in use today. It is designed to make you familiar with the installation of different types of circuits, including practical construction and inspection and testing of all circuits built.
During these 10 days of training, we will cover everything you need to know to move forward and complete electrical work in and around the home once you have registered for Part P.
After having undertaken the appropriate Introductory Electrical Course you will then be completely prepared to move onto:
C&G 17th Edition (C&G 2382-12)
The aim of this 3 day electrical training course is to gain familiarity with the layout, content and application of the BS 7671 (2008) (2011) 17th Edition Regulations. This course involves no practical work, it introduces the regulations and covers their application through explanation and worked examples.
The purposes, structure and content of the updated IEE On-Site Guide will also be covered and delegates will appreciate how to use this in support of the BS 7671.
There are eight units making up the course relating to Parts 1-7 and the Appendices of BS 7671 (2008) (2011)
- Scope, object and fundamental principles
- Definitions
- Assessment of general characteristics
- Protection for safety
- Selection and erection of equipment
- Inspection and testing
- Special installations or locations
- Appendices
We will explore in detail how to use BS 7671 (2008) (2011) and IEE on-site Guide, we will go over preparation for City & Guilds 2382-12 examination which is: 2-hour multiple-choice examination. The exam is 'open book', meaning during the two hour exam you will be able to refer to the 17th edition book.
Domestic Electrical Installation Course for New Entrants incorporates:
10 Day Introductory to Electrics and 17th Edition as detailed above PLUS:
C&G 2392-10 – Inspection & Testing
This qualification has been developed in conjunction with the electrical industry to provide less experienced candidates with an introduction of how to inspect and test (conduct the initial verification) of electrical installations.
During the course candidates learn how to carry out inspection and testing using various training rigs simulating real electrical installations and are then given the opportunity to perform the inspection, testing and verification on an individual basis.
Course content:
- Preparation for initial inspection and testing
- Electrical Inspection
- Electrical Testing
The above consist of both practical and theoretical electrical training to ensure that all underpinning knowledge requirements are supported by frequent practical activities. Practical competence is established by way of a practical assessment and theory knowledge is assessed by way of a multiple choice on-line exam.
C&G 2393-10 – City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in the Building Regulations
This 1 day course explains how any building work conducted as part of an electrical installation should meet the requirements of Building Control. It outlines the procedures that domestic electrical installers should work to and how to follow them.
This course requires individuals to undertake an open book, multiple choice on-line exam.
We feel that either of these training options for New Entrant Domestic Installers are an excellent introduction for anyone looking to invest in training.

I took the 5 day introduction to electrics with Able Skills. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole week, it was very informative and taught in the simplest way possible to gain a good understanding very quickly. The course Tutor was quick to inform us “there’s no such thing as a stupid question” and was happy to answer anything and everything we threw at him! Great value for money and I would definitely recommend
