Able Skills has put together a package of various Electrical training courses and qualifications for those of you looking to enter the Domestic Installer industry and be taken from a complete beginner to a level which will see you not only competent in your own electrical installation abilities but will also provide you with a qualification to declare your understanding of practical instrument testing.

This package of electrical training will also benefit those of you who are eventually looking to undertake City & Guilds 2391 (Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations) which ultimately will allow you to be able to test the installations of others.

Electrical Qualifications Available

20 days of Electrical training, comprising of 5 Electrical Courses, assessments and examinations will see you taken through a variety of practical tasks to ascertain your installation competencies and lead you towards:

1.    Able Skills Introductory to Electrics
2.    Part P qualifications at level 2,
3.    level 3 City & Guilds qualifications (2382)
4.    level 3 City & Guilds qualifications (2377)
5.    level 2 City & Guilds (2392)

This Electrical training package can be broken down into 4 separate training blocks, starting with our 5 day Introductory Electrical course. This 5 day Electrical course has been put together by our Electricians to cover the practical elements of domestic installations but at the same time is devised with Part P in mind and so you will always be guided towards what work you can and cannot undertake in a domestic dwelling.

The second aspect of this Electrical package will be the Domestic Installer qualification: EAL VRQ Level 2. This Electrical course is a mixture of practical and theory assessments and will take you through various modules. As you go through the week you are guided through the Building

Regulations then assessed at the end of the week by a multiple choice exam.

The third part of this Electrical package is City & Guilds 2382:17th Edition wiring regulations. Undertaking this electrical qualification is a requirement of any Part P Governing body that you choose to register with.

Obtaining this qualification proves to your Governing body that you have progressed with your understanding of electrical installations and that you have gained familiarity with the layout, content and application of the BS 7671 (2008) 17th Regulations Edition.

In addition to this electrical course, we will also provide you with training and exam for City & Guilds 2377- Portable Appliance Testing.

This is not an essential element of Part P but there is a legal accountability on employers, employees and self-employed persons to comply with the provisions regulations and to take reasonable and practical steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of electrical equipment, a very useful level 3 qualification to hold.

Finally, City and Guilds 2392-10 is a level 2 City & Guilds qualification which is specifically aimed at electricians and others who have limited or no experience in the use of test instruments. The course is structured and designed to prepare candidates who wish to go on to achieve the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate 2391-10.

Our electrical instructors have a vast knowledge of both domestic and commercial electrics having spent years working out on site within the electrical industry and now find themselves in teaching roles.

There is frequently change in Electrical regulations and requirements and on occasion, the introduction of new or altered qualifications to support individuals knowledge of electrics.

This particular Electrical package will provide you with the skills and knowledge to register for Part P. The qualifications obtained during this 4 week Electrical package will also give you the confidence to move onto City & Guilds 2391 at a later stage

Electrical Course One/Week 1 – Introductory to Electrics (5 days):

Electrical Course Two/Week 2 – EAL VRQ Level 2 (5 days):

The objective of the award is to ensure that the industry has an appropriate qualification to encourage candidates into the domestic electrical industry. This EAL VRQ Level 2 covers the necessary skills needed by those looking at changing careers to enter the domestic electrical sector.

Classroom and practical based assessment and exam covering:

•    Applicable Building Regulations for Domestic Electrical Installation
•    Electrical Safety Legislation, Regulations, Standards and Terminology
•    Domestic Electrical Circuit Installation
•    Installing Domestic Lighting Circuits
•    Domestic Electrical Earthing and Bonding Requirements
•    Inspecting, Testing and Commissioning Single Phase Domestic Electrical Circuits
•    Special Locations and Installations Including Kitchens
•    Domestic Electrical Installation Pre-Work Survey / Inspection
•    Basic Understanding of 3 Phase

Electrical Course Three/Week 3 – C&G 2382-10 (3 days):

This qualification will provide confirmation that you have gained familiarity with the layout, content and application of the BS 7671 (2008) 17th Regulations Edition.

•    The scope and object of the Regulations
•    The fundamental requirements for safety
•    Terminology and Definitions
•    Assessment of General Characteristics
•    Overcurrent Protection, Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop
•    Isolation and Switching
•    Shock Protection, Earthing and Bonding
•    Selection and Erection of Equipment
•    Special Installations or Locations
•    Inspection and testing
•    Preparation for City & Guilds 2382 examination
•    Assessment: 2-hour multiple-choice (open book) examination

Candidates are required to have a copy of the following:

•    BS 7671:2008 - Requirements for electrical installations. IEE Wiring Regulations. Seventeenth edition

Electrical Course Four/Week 3 – C&G 2377-12 (2 days):

This course is suited to those of you who require a detailed knowledge of in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment (portable appliance testing).

Practical and theory training covering:

•    Essential and optional tests
•    Flash and earth leakage testing
•    Documentation (test records)
•    Test precautions
•    Load and operations tests
•    Class I and II testing
•    Preparation for City & Guilds 2377 examination and Assessment: 1-hour multiple-choice (open book) examination with instant results.

Candidates are required to have a copy of the following:


•    IEE: Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment

This course will ensure that you have gained knowledge of what needs to be tested, the procedures for testing and the type of records required.

Electrical Course Five/Week 4 – C&G 2392-10 (5 days):

The course contains a significant number of hands on workshop style training sessions, which cover all of the processes involved in initial verification as described in Part 6 of BS7671:2008.

This course will be particularly beneficial for electricians who are about to undertake an external assessment by the NICEIC and it would also be suitable for Domestic Installers carrying out work under Part P of the Building Regulations.

In addition, this is a valuable course for those with limited experience of inspection and testing of electrical installations

All candidates are assessed by an On-Line exam,50 questions, multiple choice and the results are instant; in addition there is a separate 2 hour practical assessment

Practical and theory training covering:

•    Safe isolation
•    Overview of Part 6/Chapter 61 BS 7671:2008
•    Processes involved in initial verification
•    Visual inspection
•    Sequence of Testing
•    Carrying out Tests
•    Evaluating and interpreting test results
•    Installation Test Certificates/schedules of Tests

Candidates who successfully complete both assessments in the qualification will receive a full certificate.

Candidates are required to have a copy of each of the following:

•    BS 7671:2008 - Requirements for electrical installations. IEE Wiring Regulations - Seventeenth Edition
•    On-Site Guide (BS 7671:2008 Wiring Regulations, 17th Edition)
•    Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing, 5th Edition

City & Guilds describe this course as a pre-cursor qualification which should prepare learners who want to progress to the 2391-10 qualification.

Alternative Options

As an alternative, we also provide training for those of you looking to become Electricians within the Commercial and Industrial sector. For this you would start with City & Guilds 2330 at level 2 and then add on additional training and qualifications when you are ready.
