This plumbing course starts with basic pipe work skills and moves onto more complex plumbing tasks, including airing cupboards, bathroom suites, above ground drainage, central heating installation (no gas/oil) and low carbon steel.
The various tasks set will provide you with the skills to undertake such work competently and safely once you are working as a Plumber.
Able Skills has a dedicated team of experienced and competent Plumbing instructors who have all previously spent time within the industry, undertaking various aspects of plumbing and gas work so they are without a doubt, the best placed people to deliver this qualification to you.
These Plumbing and Domestic Electrical qualifications are also available at Able Skills over weekends.
What is the correct route to Plumbing
Many training providers will try and sell you City & Guilds 6022 or 6032 as an equivalent or as industry recognised qualifications but they are not. These courses will not provide you with the skills or knowledge a plumber needs.
We are aware that there are many training centres in the UK offering the plumbing award 6189 and we would advise caution when you are ready to book a course like this.
Things to check before you book:
• We recommend that you confirm the Training Centres City & Guilds Registration number and also that you enquire as to the qualifications of their staff.
• In order for your plumbing course to run swiftly and smoothly, you should ensure that your chosen training centre has qualified Instructors, Assessors and Internal Verifiers.
• Better still, visit the centre and view the facilities available.
• You should be allowed access to see the training bays, chat to instructors and additionally, any existing students.
• Lastly, confirm the timing of your course. If your intended course is to be achieved in blocks then be sure that you can return at a time of your choice and that you will not be left waiting for months on end.
This qualification is Industry standard and should sell itself. You should not have to endure heavy duty salesmen tactics either at a training facility or in your home.
Able Skills is open 7 days every week and we welcome visitors at all times. Please feel free to come along to view our facilities, have an informal chat with any one of our instructors and meet existing students.
We feel that this is an excellent introduction for anyone looking to invest in training and this option will help you decide if Able Skills is where you want to train.

Electrical and Part P
As Plumbers, any Electrical work you undertake is likely to be within ‘special locations': Bathrooms and Kitchens, installing showers and extractor fans etc. Any work undertaken in these areas is notifiable to local building control unless you are registered onto a Part P scheme as a competent person.
To register onto a Part P scheme you are required to have knowledge of domestic installation and a relevant qualification which determines that you are competent and able to safely work on electrical equipment in the home.
Persons registered with the Part P Self-Certification Schemes will be qualified contractors with the ability to thoroughly check a circuit for safety. They are required to issue an Electrical Installation Certificate that complies with Building Regulation requirements when the work has been completed.
In order to get you to this competent level for Electrical installations, Able Skills has devised a 5 day (or 2 weekends) practical training course which will provide competency in
• Applicable Building Regulations
• Electrical Safety legislation, regulations standards and terminology
• Safe isolation procedures
• Identification of unsafe electrical situations
• Earthing and bonding requirements
• Electrical test procedures
• Cable and component selection
• Installation and replacement of electrical components
• Checking the correct and safe operation of installed electrical components
• Recording of electrical test results and completion of certification
• Installing and/or rerouting cables
• Special Locations
• New circuit requirements
• Lighting installations
• Maintenance
• Supplies
With this information safely under your belt, the next step will be to obtain the Domestic Installer Qualification which will enable you to register for Part P.
Able Skills is approved by Emta Awards Ltd (EAL) to deliver this qualification.
This is a further 5 day course, predominantly class room based and you will be assessed on your Electrical Installation knowledge which you will have obtained with us on the first 5 day course. At the end of the week you will undergo a multiple choice, On-Line examination to obtain this award in full.
The units covered on this 5 day course (or 2 weekends) are:
| EAL Code | VRQ: 500/4385/7 | QCA Code |
| CDEI/001 | Applicable Building Regulations for Domestic Electrical Installation |
F/102/7127 |
| CDEI/002 | Electrical Safety Legislation, Regulations, Standards and Terminology |

| CDEI/008 | Domestic Electrical Installation Pre-Work Survey / Inspection | R/501/8912 |
