City & Guilds 6129 Level 2 Technical Certificate Plumbing Theory Training.
The Basics.
The current industry recognised entry level to the plumbing industry is the City & Guilds 6129 Level 2 Certificate.
Able Skills offer a number of flexible options to train for this fully verifiable qualification.
You may choose to train on one of the following set course periods of instruction:
(i) Full-Time. (ii) Two Block Periods. (iii) Weekends Only. (iv) Home Study (Theory)
The Home Study option is part of a two-stage training Course, consisting of:
Plumbing Training Theory - A Home Study Self-Assessment Course.
Plumbing Training Practical – Workshop Tuition.
The Able Skills Home Study Course is specifically designed to allow for the following:
- Learning in your own time and at your own pace. The Able Skills Home Study Manual provides you with the complete foundation course of essential plumbing knowledge theory required to be learnt before undertaking practical workshop training.
Only when you are ready – and have successfully completed each stage of the Plumbing Training Theory - may you then be able to be ‘hands-on’ and receive your Plumbing Training Practical tuition in the Able Skills workshop.
- Full Practical Learning Support. Guidance and advice are continuously provided throughout the period of your Home Study by our City & Guilds / NVQ Trained and CITB approved team of Assessor/Instructors.
- On Going Assessment - only when you are ready and at your request,after discussion with your tutor. At key stages throughout your Home Study period, Course theory assessments can be booked to be carried out at the Able Skills centre over the weekend. Theory assessments are made on the Saturday and basic practical skills testing on the Sunday. Successful candidates will be offered the opportunity to move onto the next knowledge set of training theory.
Flexible Payment Plans. We offer highly flexible spread payment plans to cover all four training time options, either: Full Time, Two Block Periods, Weekends Only or Home Study.
Further Opportunities for Career Advancement.
Candidates who successfully complete both Part One – Plumbing Training Theory and Part Two- Plumbing Training Practical and are awarded the City & Guilds 6129 Level 2 Technical Certificate would be eligible to undertake the full Plumbing NVQ( National Vocational Qualification) 6089 Level 2. This is the collection of evidence of work carried out in the real workplace. You must work with a qualified plumber who holds Level 3 (or equivalent) or who can prove 5 years or more within the Industry.
Able Skills offer further related key City & Guilds approved courses in Electrical, Gas, Plastering, Bricklaying and Tiling, which will qualify you to be ‘Industry Ready’ anywhere throughout the UK/ EU and other countries.

Course Contents
The City & Guilds 6129 Level 2 Technical Certificate Plumbing Theory Training Course consists of 11 learning units :
- Health & Safety.
- Key Plumbing Principles.
- Common Plumbing Principles.
- Cold Water Systems.
- Domestic Hot Water Systems.
- Sanitation / Above Ground Discharge Pipework Systems only.
- Central Heating Systems – Pipework.
- Electrical Systems.
- Sheet Lead Weathering.
- Environmental Awareness.
- Effective Working Relationships – Gola End Assessment.
Each unit contains their own number of specific items of knowledge that are required to be thoroughly learnt, fully understood and carefully assessed by fully verifiable examination before proceeding to the next unit.
Training Options.
We offer four set courses of training time. You may choose from one of the following options:
- Full Time.
- (ii) Two Block Periods.
- (iii) Weekends Only .
- (iv) Home Study (Theory).
Option One - Full Time Attendance – One Continuous Block.
Ten Weeks. The complete, continuous and uninterrupted Course, requiring full time attendance at the Able Skills Centre and Workshops. Training time is 08.30 – 16.30.
Option Two – Full Time Attendance – Two Separate Consecutive Blocks.
Ten Weeks. Two separate full time blocks consisting of 5 consecutive weeks each with one 5-week break between the two blocks. Training time is 08.30 – 16.30.
Option Three – Weekends Only (Sat and Sun).
Twenty Weekends over a period of 10 months. Consisting of a continuous rolling schedule of two consecutive weekends of study (Sat and Sun) followed by a break of two consecutive weekends. Training time is 08.30 – 16.30. There is a 9-day Assessment block at the conclusion of the formal 10-month training period.
Option Four – A Two-Part Course With Home Study (Plumbing Theory).
Open-Ended time period (Maximum of 12 months). Allows learning in your own time and at your own pace. Assessment on the required key units of knowledge to be learnt is made only when you are ready and are conducted on a Weekend. Assessment on the required Plumbing Training Theory units is made on Saturday. You will be able to receive Practical plumbing training and skills testing in the Able Skills workshop on the Sunday.
Local accommodation can be made available at £ 20.00 per night.

Able Skills offer highly flexible and extremely competitive payment plans, at no interest, and inclusive of VAT, to train on a City & Guilds qualification course.
Able Skills flexible ‘Pay As You Train’ Scheme.
You will be able to spread your course fee across a period of time ( Maximum of 12 months).
A deposit of £500 is required at the initial booking stage.
The balance payable in instalments as you progress with your training.
No interest.
Inclusive of VAT.

(iv)Home Study Plumbing Training Theory (Part of a two-stage training Course).
How The Plan Works.
- The Able Skills flexible ‘Pay As You Train’ Scheme for the two-part training course requires an initial deposit of £ 500 with the balance of the payment fee to be spread across the entire training period (maximum of 12 months) –ie- both the Home Study (Theory) and Workshop (Practical), payable in instalments as you progress with your training.
- Upon receipt of the initial deposit, you will receive, by post, the Able Skills Home Study Manual containing the first set of learning units, upon which, you will be assessed.
- Only when you are ready and at your request, a Course theory assessment on the first set of learning units can be booked to be carried out at the Able Skills centre on a Weekend. Assessment on Plumbing Training Theory units are made on the Saturday. Subject to successfully passing the Theory Assessment, Practical plumbing tuition in the Able Skills workshop is on a Sunday.
- Candidates who successfully pass the assessment will be offered the opportunity to move onto the next set of learning units of training theory and a staged payment would be required to be made at this point. Candidates would be given the next set of learning units.
- The same procedure for the theory course learning, assessments, practical tuition and fee payments applies throughout your individual training period on the Home Study Course.
- The maximum period allowed on the Pay As You Train spread payment plan, for combined Home Study and subsequent Practical tuition, is 12 months from payment of initial deposit.
- The amount of each staged payment is calculated upon the volume of work required to be studied for each assessment.
