New Entrant Gas Training

New Entrant Complete Gas Training Package - Experienced Plumbers etc......

Able Skills has devised a comprehensive package of training, work placement and assessment for those of you who have some experience of the Gas industry or related trades, those of you who have worked with copper pipe and low carbon steel and who do not require any training in this area.

This complete package will provide you with all of the skills, knowledge and experience to become Gas Safe registered so that you can start a new career as a Gas Engineer.

If you do require training in aspects of copper pipework and low carbon steel please visit New Entrant Complete Gas Training Package

New Entrant (Category 3) Candidates are:

• those of you who are brand new to the gas industry and
• those of you do not hold the relevant gas trade associated qualifications, even if you have been working within the Gas industry

Access and entry to the Gas industry has previously been known to be a long-drawn-out process, typically taking at least 2 years. However, there are now quicker ways to access the gas industry and there is no longer the requirement to spend years at College before even being considered for the industry.

The areas of knowledge and skills that you will need to undertake to be able to register with Gas Safe are broken down into Practical skills, Knowledge units, Performance units and Assessments. Able Skills has devised a complete training programme to incorporate all of these aspects to make the whole process as accessible as possible for you.

New Entrant (Category 3) Gas Training Package - Experienced Plumbers etc......

1. Domestic Gas Safety Training

For new entrants to the gas industry, Able Skills provides a comprehensive Managed Learning Programme which covers all aspects of domestic gas work and gas safety which will prepare you for working on various gas appliances. This new entrant's gas training course is a real mix of workshop and classroom study to ensure that all aspects of domestic gas and related appliances are covered.

Progress is monitored with regular practical and written assessments and all evidence is recorded and retained for any Governing body to view at any time; these strict control methods safeguard all candidates and assessors and ensure that accurate, quality Gas training is delivered.

2. Work Placement / Tool kit

Part of the process to becoming Gas Safe registered is to prove competence working on various aspects of gas. This will need to be undertaken under the supervision of a Gas Safe registered Engineer whereby a portfolio is completed detailing the gas work that has been done, supported by photographic evidence and signed by your Gas Safe registered Engineer.

Able Skills are able to arrange this placement for you, taking the hassle out of you searching for a suitable Gas Safe Engineer. Able Skills sister company: Able On-time Services, has secured a variety of gas work and placements will be arranged for students to ensure that the requirements of the portfolio are met to a very high standard.

All gas work will be undertaken under the supervision of Able On-time Services own Engineers who have all been through this New Entrant process previously with Able Skills and know just how demanding this aspect of the Gas Safe registration process can be.

To ensure that you are work ready, we will also provide you with a tool kit containing the essentials to undertake gas work during your portfolio placement. The tool kit is yours to keep so once you have achieved Gas Safe registration, you will have what you need to get you working.

3. ACS (Approved Certification Scheme)

During this final hurdle, you will undertake assessment to achieve CCN1 (Core Gas Safety) and then any appliances which you are eligible to undertake (this is determined by the evidence in your work based portfolio).

Able Skills is approved by CITB for the purposes of Gas Assessment and successful candidates will receive certification for their CCN1 and Appliances from CITB.

CCN1 and at least one appliance is a requirement in order to register with Gas Safe. This year (2011), we have expanded our Gas assessment area to meet the demand of students completing their gas portfolios and this should ensure that students can be booked in immediately after their portfolio is completed to achieve this final stage of the gas training/assessment process.

Able Skills Commitment to Training

Able Skills is very proud of the training we provide for potential gas course candidates and we are very conscious that getting it wrong can be fatal. The programmes of learning devised here are to ensure that from the start, individuals are given the opportunity to work towards becoming competent and safe Gas Engineers; all of the Gas training we provide is arranged to identify an individual's suitability for the Gas industry and to assist them in achieving the required standards to work within the Gas industry

Our qualified team of Gas Trainers and Assessors will provide guidance, support and assistance in a realistic environment to build confidence and competence so that you are ready to undertake your work placement.

Training to achieve Able Skills Managed Learning Programme Gas Certificate is recommended to ensure knowledge of changes to legislation, British Standards and industry best practice. If you come under the category of New Entrant, this is the correct and recognised route to take to get you started.

Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI gas registration in Great Britain on 1 April 2009. It is now the official industry stamp for gas safety

Complete Gas Training Package - Experienced Plumbers etc......

In order to achieve Gas Safe Registration from New Entrant status, there are a series of steps which an individual must undertake.

Stage 1 - Domestic Gas Safety Training - 3 Weeks

This 3 week long Gas course is essential training and assessment for all candidates looking to gain access to the Gas Industry.

Week 1

Week 1 of this Gas Training Course will provide you with a great insight into the Gas industry and present you with an understanding of the guidelines and regulations which currently govern the ACS scheme.

During this week of gas training, we will again cover basic pipework skills, gas appliance functions and the basic principles of flues and combustion to give candidates the knowledge required to move forward to the next aspect of this Gas course.

At the end of this initial 5 days of gas training, you will undertake a written assessment/multiple choice exam to establish your understanding of the areas that have been covered so far.

Weeks 2 and 3

As you progress through the weeks, the gas course will develop and you will receive training in:

1. Legislation
2. Tightness Testing
3. Pipework requirements
4. Gas safety controls

Again, you will undertake a series of exams and practical assessments to satisfy your instructor that you fully understand all the areas covered at this stage.

Finally, we will provide you with training in:

1. Flueing
2. Ventilation
3. Unsafe situations
And with time permitting, we will provide extra training in the servicing of various appliances.

Stage 2 - Work Placement / Tool kit (From 6 weeks >)

Work based Competence and Gas Portfolios

Following completion of your 3 weeks of Gas training, exams and assessments you will be deemed competent to undertake supervised gas work. It will be during this time that you will build a comprehensive portfolio to demonstrate your competence and safety whilst undertaking gas work.

Able Skills will arrange the placement for you by placing you with an Engineer employed by Able Skills sister company: Able On-Time Services. All of the Engineers employed by On-Time Services are previous students of Able Skills and they have all been through the rigorous training and assessment process themselves and have also undertaken work based portfolio completion.

They fully understand the stresses of finding placements to achieve their Gas qualifications which is why we have put this company into play, to save you the hassle!

Their experience of the processes makes them the best men for the job of mentoring new candidates and ensuring that the supervised work is achieved in the correct manner and that all portfolio paperwork is completed and up to date -
You will receive guidance throughout on how the portfolio evidence should be recorded.

To ensure that you are work ready, we will also provide you with a tool kit containing the essentials to undertake gas work during your portfolio placement. The tool kit is yours to keep so once you have achieved Gas Safe registration, you will have what you need to get you working.

Separately, we also have access to a number of other Gas Safe registered Engineers who are happy to take our overflow and again, the majority of them have all trained at Able Skills.

In addition, Able Skills Gas Instructors are readily available to answer any questions or queries which may arise whilst you are building your evidence.

Stage 3 - ACS (Approved Certification Scheme)- (5 days)

CCN1 Simulation

Once your portfolio has been completed to the standards required by Able Skills Gas Assessors, candidates will be required to undertake a mandatory practical and written assessment which will simulate CCN1 plus 1 appliance in preparation for assessment for CCN1.

ACS / Core Domestic Gas Safety including Appliances

CCN1 will need to be completed before you are eligible for Gas Safe registration and this is a requirement for all operatives involved in the installation, maintenance and servicing of domestic gas appliances and pipe-work installations.

The purpose of this Training/Assessment is to provide operatives with the knowledge and skills relating to safety regulations, procedures and British Standards, which must be applied when working on Gas Installations.

Initial assessment for CCN1 will require 5 days and will be a mixture of additional training and assessment and will cover:

1. Gas Safety Regulations, British Standards and Manufacturers' Instructions.
2. Emergency Procedures, Labels and Warning Notices.
3. Unsafe Situations, and Related Documentation.
4. Combustion, Gas Rates, Burner/Installation Pressures.
5. Testing for Tightness, Purging and Relighting Appliances.
6. Pipework and Fittings.
7. Operation of Appliance Gas Safety Devices and Controls.
8. Ventilation.
9. Flueing Standards, Installation and Testing.

CCN1 is a prerequisite for the various appliance courses which you may want to undertake:

Appliances

1. CENWAT - Central Heating Boilers & Water Heaters
2. MET1 - Meters
3. CKR1 - Domestic Cookers
4. HTR1 - Gas Fires & Wall Heaters
5. CPA1 - Combustion Performance Analysis
6. DAH1 - Warm Air Heating Appliances - Coming Soon

The Appliances to be covered on assessment will be determined by the evidence you have gained during your work placement and portfolio building.

*If candidates fail to achieve the required level of competency in either the practical or theory assessment, it may be necessary for them to re-sit the sections which they have failed. If this situation arises an additional cost may be incurred.
