Able Skills is an established and reputable City & Guilds and CAA (Construction Awards Alliance) approved training centre. We are therefore accredited to provide training, assessment and exams in order for you to obtain an ICA (Intermediate Construction Award) in wall and floor tiling. Individually, each tiling member of staff has a vast array of knowledge from having previously spent years working within the tiling industry.

Intermediate Construction Award (ICA) Wall and Floor tiling

This course is suitable for people who are not at this moment working in the wall and floor tiling industry and who would like to obtain the required qualification to work towards becoming a professional Tiler.

All ICA units are related to their equivalent NVQ unit, and we will advise you what extra assessments are required to gain the related NVQ unit once you are working within the tiling industry.

To obtain the ICA in full, you must also pass an independent Health and Safety test which will take place at your nearest D.S.A. theory test centre.

Able Skills has a dedicated Health and Safety Advisor on site who will provide you with all the training necessary to assist you with this test. Additionally, you will also sit a separate job knowledge test; this test is set and marked by City and Guilds.

The Units you must complete to achieve this award are:

During your training you will work in a variety of different bays such as kitchens, bathrooms and shower cubicles. You will choose materials and adhesives for specific surfaces required within your working bay and estimate and design the tiling as you progress, either to your design or a given brief (as a customer would supply). You will prepare the surfaces and then use a wide variety of tiles including ceramics, mosaics, natural stone etc, in a variety of patterns to give different designs & finishes.

You will learn the different techniques for dealing with problems areas, including damaged plaster, window recesses, pipes, uneven walls, levelling floors etc, giving you the ability to tile in real life situations.

Accuracy is a major factor of the course and this will ensure that you are able to tile to the highest standards. Over the duration of the course your speed will build and as you progress your own technique will develop as your knowledge builds.

Once you have completed this course you will have sufficient confidence to undertake any tiling installation that you come across, whatever design or type of Tile, to an industry accepted standard.

This is a hands-on, practical course, it is therefore recommended you bring suitable clothing and for your own safety, steel capped footwear is essential. All tools and materials are provided throughout your training time at Able Skills.

If you are still unsure if Tiling is the career of your choice, why not try our 5 day Intensive course first. This will help you decide if you want to progress to a qualification and a career in Tiling.
