Weekend Tiling Courses from Able Skills
At Able Skills we are aware that many people have commitments through the week but would still like to receive training in various subjects.
As a result, Able Skills offers a variety of Tiling courses spread over 2 consecutive week end periods. The course content remains unchanged, 5 days Tiling training condensed into 4.
You can choose individual Tiling courses or build Tiling packages to suit your requirements, safe in the knowledge that everything you choose is available every weekend.
Our Tiling Centre is a fantastic facility which mirrors real life and you will never be disappointed at what we have on offer here. Our dedicated team of Tiling Instructors are passionate about what they teach and will promise the same level of excellent tuition to everyone, even if you are only here for 1 weekend!!!
Intensive Tiling - Course Schedule:
- Setting out your tiling work,
- Explaining all the different adhesives used for different surfaces
- Demonstrating all the tools required.
- Cutting tiles using wet tile cutters, dry tile cutters, tile scribes, tile snips and tile saws.
- Explaining tiling involving Borders, Diamonds and Patterns
- How to cut around windows and reveals
- How to cope with tiling difficult areas such as uneven walls
- How to tile angled ceilings and socket areas.
- How to tile splash-backs
- How to tile around boxed in pipes.
Advanced Tiling - Course Schedule:
- How to cope with more difficult obstacles such as shower attachments
- Tiling behind existing sink pedestals
- Tiling behind radiators and
- Tiling around toilet waste soil pipes.
- Obtaining more speed and precision incorporating different materials including mosaics.
- We will also tackle more patterns including brickwork pattern
- You will be taught the correct procedure to remove and replace damaged existing tiles with new tiles.
- You will also learn how to estimate tile quantities required for each individual job
- How to prepare a quote.
- Explain and demonstrate how to lay and fit under-floor heating
City & Guilds Unit Accreditation - Course Schedule:
Practical activities will enable the candidate to:
- Prepare floor and wall to receive tiles.
- Fix Straight edge and check for level.
- Apply adhesives.
- Fix tiles.
- Apply Grouting.
- Clean tools, equipment.
Underpinning knowledge will enable the candidate to:
- State the health & safety implications of using powdered materials and ready mixed adhesives.
- State the need for use of PPE and SSOW
- Give reasons for levels and straight edges.
- Identify types of tiles.
- Give reasons for grouting.
- Give reasons for gaps when applying tiles.
- State the need for a clean and tidy work area.
Natural Stone – Course Schedule:
This course is entirely hands on from beginning to end and is ideally for people who have some experience in the tiling industry or for those of you who have completed some tiling training at Able Skills.
- Identification of materials
- Cleaning and maintenance
- Knowledge of fixing and sealing all varieties of Natural Stone
- Sealing, products and stain removal
- Fixing slate and marble to wall and floors
- Cutting and Drilling
Marble
This course will teach you
- How to tile with 4” x 4” natural tumbled marble.
- Understand required adhesives
- How to seal natural stone
- Grouting techniques
- How to enhance the stones natural features
Slate
This course will teach you
- The difference between calibrated and uncallibrated slate
- How to lay 12” x 12” natural slate tiles
- Understand required adhesives
- How to clean and maintain slate tiles
- Stain removal and sealing
- Grouting techniques
- How to overcome uneven thickness of the tile when laying it onto a floor.
You will be cutting natural stone with specialist cutting equipment and understanding relevant tools required to complete any job undertaken to a high standard.
Tanking and Screeding - Course Schedule:
Having learned to tile, it is also important to understand the different preparation systems in place for various different surfaces.
Tanking
Tiling in wet areas such as shower cubicles can often be a problem as there is always an element of doubt that if you apply your tiles onto plasterboard or marine ply board in wet areas, that you could encounter a failed tiled installation, in other words, the tiles may fall off after a short period of time costing you financially for the repair.
This Tanking course will show you
- How to eliminate this problem.
- How to apply specified tanking systems to these wet areas (prior to tiling)
- Extinguish any doubts you may have about tiles falling off.
- Ensure a tiled installation which will not fail.
We will go through the system of applying tanking systems from start to finish so that when you have completed your course at Able Skills you will be capable of tiling in wet areas with confidence.
As you will be tiling the area after having completed the tanking system, we require that you have some tiling background or have attended a tiling training course at Able Skills.
Screeding
Not all areas are always instantly ready to receive tiles and you may on occasion come across floors which may need levelling.
Floor screeding is set with the sole purpose of producing a true, flat, hard wearing surface which has the ability to be the base for additional coverings, such as tiles.
Our course will teach you how to
- Calculate the quantities of materials required
- Gauge and mix screeding materials
- Transfer datum levels
- Prepare background areas, brush and bond
- Position screeding battens/screeds
- Lay and finish floor screeds level and to falls
- Incorporate drainage inlets
Mosaic Tiling - Course Schedule:
Mosaic tiling can add a new look to a home. There are a wide range of types, sizes and finishes available, something to suit everyone.
- Able Skills weekend Mosaic tiling course will teach you
- How to prepare your surfaces
- How to calculate tile quantities
- How to cut your tiles
- How to fix your tiles with the correct adhesives according to your tile material
- How to grout the tiled area.
This intricate tiling system can produce a beautiful finish once you have learned all of the techniques associated with Mosaic tiling.
The option to train for a career as a Tiler at weekends will benefit those of you in full time work or those of you with other weekly commitments.

Progression at Able Skills is very important to us and as an NVQ Assessment Centre; we have the capability of moving you forward to achieve qualifications.
All of our staff are NVQ assessors and can provide advice and guidance on portfolio building to ensure that you gather the correct evidence once you are working within the tiling industry.
