Training and Qualifications for working in Australia
Following an increased volume of enquiries relating to Emigrating and Qualifications, Able Skills have compiled below, a basic and straightforward introduction to the requirements for being able to work in Construction in Australia.
There are equivalent certification grade requirements to the UK’s City & Guilds NVQ training qualification grades in Australia and final assessments of your eligibility to work using your UK gained skill. Consideration is given to your individual profile relating to background, health, family connections and language as well as your detailed training, experience and work/employment destination.
Australia has a points system for each of the requirements and a minimum number of points has to be obtained in order to take your application further.
Australia
The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) sets specific basic requirements that all applicants must meet in order to apply for a visa in the General Skilled Migration program.
Information on The Migration Program
Migrants today fall into two main categories for a place in the Migration Program: half the 70,000 places each year go to skilled migrants as Australia seeks those migrants who have skills and qualifications to improve the Australian society and economy.
Skilled Migrants
The Independent Skilled Migrant is most likely to be the most relevant Visa application in the following list, but other selected categories of migrants in the Skilled Scheme are also included here.
1. Independent Skilled Migrants.
For qualified persons in an approved occupation in Australia
Must be under 45 to apply
2. Skilled Migrant - Australian Linked.
Applicants who have close family members in Australia able to sponsor them.
Applicants are assessed on age, qualifications, English & other language abilities.
3. Employer Nominated Migrant
Employers may nominate skilled people from overseas to fill an Australian job vacancy when no one local has suitable skills for the job.
Age, qualifications and English abilities are assessed.
4. Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme
If your Australian employer, who wants to nominate you, is in a remote area outside metropolitan districts, he or she can sponsor you through this scheme.
Applicants of the Independent Skilled Migrant visa must be able to demonstrate that they possess a qualification or the skills of an occupation on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
In addition, they are assessed for their ability to satisfy the basic visa criteria and to meet a current pass mark of 120 points on an assessment. Applicants do not need sponsorship from family or the Australian government.
Successful applicants will obtain Australian permanent residence, which will entitle them to live and work in Australia without any restrictions. Australian permanent residents may also be eligible for Australian citizenship.

Skilled Visa applications - Points test
Applicants intending to apply for a skilled Australian visa, under the Australian migrationskilled program must meet basic criteria assessed by points.
Qualifications are obviously very important, it however is no longer the primary criteria for skills based applications.
Basis for the points test
-
The procedure starts off with an occupations assessment.
-
Your occupation must match and be on the approved occupations list.
-
You are then “tested” i.e. your skills, experience, and importantly qualifications are assessed against the Australian standards for that specific occupation i.e. you need X experience, Y skills and Z qualifications to be assessed as equivalent to the Australian standards for a specific occupation. Only after you pass the occupations assessment can you lodge the actual visa application.
-
This cannot be done prior to receipt of the successful outcome of the occupations assessment. Occupations assessments take anywhere from 1 week to 4 months and is conducted by the relevant authority in Australia (based on the information you submit) responsible for settings the standards for a specific occupation. There is a fee charged by the authorities.
