Welcome to Able Skills Weekend Tiling Courses

Since opening in 2002, Able Skills has always offered individuals the opportunity to re-train, regardless of circumstance. Our flexibility in the various training options we have cannot be beaten anywhere and coupled with interest free payment plans and a hassle free booking process, there really isn’t any reason not to train at Able Skills.

If you have an interest in learning to tile, whether it’s for DIY purposes or to gain a level 1, 2 or 3 qualification then Able Skills is certainly the place to achieve this. With our opening times being Monday to Sunday and also Bank Holidays, we feel that we can cater for the majority of the population.

Weekend courses at Able Skills are an increasingly popular training option and on our Full Details page we have detailed all of the tiling courses which can be achieved by training at weekends along with details of their cost, deposit amounts and payment plans.

Able Skills Tiling centre is open on a 2 weekend on and 2 weekend off basis so you cannot train every single weekend but if you are working through the week then you probably wouldn’t want to anyway.

For the level 3 qualification course there will be a requirement for you to undertake a block of 9 days towards the end of the course. This is arranged to include 2 weekends so you will only ever have to use 5 days through the week – during this period you will undertake your final level 3 assessment.

Our course times are scheduled for 08.30 – 16.30 for both Saturday and Sunday attendance and our interest free payment options still apply. We also have accommodation available for anyone who might be travelling some distance.

We encourage visitors to our Centre without the need for an appointment. We are happy for anyone to turn up during our opening hours to have a look around, view the facilities, chat to instructors and students and decide from there if this is where you want to do your training.

Combining Full Time and Part Time Tiling Training

We are as flexible with our training as we can be and so for longer qualification courses you can, if you choose, potentially combine weekend training with full time (Mon-Fri) training. If you state your preferred training method at the time of booking then Able Skills staff will work everything out for you, taking in to account any time that you are unavailable due to prior commitments.

Payment under these terms is likely to be calculated on a daily basis and again, no interest will be charged – you will only ever pay the price as advised on the website at the time of booking.

Regardless of which training pattern you opt for, you can rest assured that the quality of training will remain at the highest levels

Weekend DIY Tiling Course (Wall or Floor) 

 This course can cover either wall or floor tiling – you just need to choose which of the two you need to learn. The course is entirely hands on and during this 2 day DIY tiling course we will cover as much as we can in the short time you are with us, ensuring that you will be ready to tackle your DIY tiling requirements. You will learn how to set out your tiling work, we will explain and demonstrate the different adhesives used for different surfaces and all of the tools required to do the work in question.

Introductory Weekend Tiling Course

This comprehensive 4 day introduction to tiling is an entirely practical course teaching you basic tiling principles from scratch to ensure that you have a solid understanding of how to commence and complete your tiling jobs.

You will learn to set out your tiling work, understand all of the different adhesives used for different surfaces and understand all the tools required and you will cut tiles using wet tile cutters, dry tile cutters and tile snips. You will undertake tiling involving Diamonds and Patterns and learn how to cut around windows and reveals as well as how to cope with tiling difficult areas such as uneven walls. You will also learn to tile angled ceilings, socket areas, splash-backs and how to tile around boxed in pipes.

Advanced Weekend Tiling Course

This is an excellent follow on from our Introductory tiling course which will give you the opportunity to learn that little bit more, teaching you more advanced tiling techniques, using more complex tiling materials and understanding how to tile difficult areas and how to cut around obstacles. You will learn how to prepare a quote, how to estimate tile quantities required for each individual job, how to cope with more difficult obstacles such as pipes for shower attachments and toilet wastes, how to tile behind existing sink pedestals and around sockets. You will work on speed and precision incorporating different materials and patterns and be taught the correct procedure to remove and replace existing damaged tiles with new tiles. We will explain and demonstrate how to lay and fit under-floor heating and you will be shown how to install uncoupling membranes.

City & Guilds Weekend Tiling Course

An assessment process which gives you the opportunity to work to time constraints, confirm your skill level, and build a portfolio.
Practical activities will enable you to prepare floor and wall to receive tiles, apply adhesives, fix tiles and apply grouting.
Underpinning knowledge will enable you to:

• State the health & safety implications of using powdered materials and ready mixed adhesives.
• State the need for use of PPE and SSOW
• Give reasons for levels and straight edges.
• Identify types of tiles.
• Give reasons for grouting.
• Give reasons for gaps when applying tiles.
• State the need for a clean and tidy work area

This particular period of weekend training will provide the successful candidate with a City & Guilds Certificate reflecting Unit Accreditation

Natural Stone Weekend Tiling Course

Tiling differs dependent upon the tiles that you are using and when you are dealing with natural products, there are lots of different processes that you will need to understand. This course will teach you how to tile and enhance the natural features of Tumbled Marble and Slate.
You will learn how to prepare the wall and floor areas to receive natural stone products and how to measure areas in order to calculate tile quantities. You will be shown how to select and grade natural stone products and how to overcome the uneven thickness of the tile when laying it onto a floor. In addition, you will be given a demonstration on how and why you need to seal the products prior to grouting, you will seal the tiled area, grout your installation and clean as necessary prior to applying an essential 2nd coat of seal

Weekend Tanking & Floor Screeding Courses

Weekend Tanking and Screeding Course: Having learned to tile, it is also important to understand the different preparation systems in place for various different surfaces.

Tanking

Tiling in wet areas such as shower cubicles can often be a problem as there is always an element of doubt that if you apply your tiles onto plasterboard or marine ply board in wet areas, that you could encounter a failed tiled installation, in other words, the tiles may fall off after a short period of time costing you financially for the repair. This Tanking course will show you:

• How to eliminate this problem
• How to apply specified tanking systems to these wet areas (prior to tiling)
• Extinguish any doubts you may have about tiles falling off
• Ensure a tiled installation which will not fail

As you will be tiling the area after having completed the tanking system, we require that you have some tiling background or have attended a tiling training course at Able Skills.

Floor Screeding

Not all areas are always instantly ready to receive tiles and you may on occasion come across floors which may need levelling. Floor screeding is set with the sole purpose of producing a true, flat, hard wearing surface which has the ability to be the base for additional coverings, such as tiles.

• Calculate the quantities of materials required
• Gauge and mix screeding materials
• Transfer datum levels
• Prepare background areas, brush and bond
• Position screeding battens/screeds
• Lay and finish floor screeds level and to falls
• Incorporate drainage inlets

Mosaic

Teaching you how a wide range of types, sizing and finishing of Mosaics tiles can add a new look to a home. This intricate tiling system can produce a beautiful finish once you have learned all of the techniques associated with Mosaic tiling.

• Prepare your surfaces
• Calculate tile quantities
• Cut the Mosaics
• Fix the Mosaics with the correct adhesives according to your tile material
• Grout the tiled area

Our Weekend Tiling Course Packages have been put together based on the individual courses that we offer – with a discount applied. We aim to cover the content of each of our 5 day courses over 2 weekends (4 days) by having lesser class sizes, shorter breaks etc. We have a variety of packages so that everyone can choose the level that they feel that they are ready to achieve however, if someone decides that they want to learn more than we are always happy to upgrade and keep in line with advertised prices. In addition, your final 2 weeks will be an assessment which you will undertake in a fully equipped bathroom area and you will be expected to complete the project with little supervision, demonstrating everything you have learned in the tiling courses attended leading up to this point. You will be assessed on your completed work and the assessment will also be based upon your ability to calculate materials required to complete the job, the attention paid to working cleanly and methodically and your awareness of health and safety.

City & Guilds Weekend Tiling Course Package 4 (NVQ Level2)

Again, a discounted package of learning which incorporates our Introductory, Advanced, City & Guilds, Natural Stone and Tanking & Screeding courses (see details above) plus the Tiling Assessment detailed in Tiling Package 3 above however, the additional 4 weekends of attendance will also provide you with Plastering training and Geometric tiling training. This package of learning has been devised based on the requirements laid down in order to achieve NVQ level 2. Effectively, you will be taught everything that you need to know so that when you leave and are working as aTiler, you will be able to gather evidence easily in order to achieve NVQ Level 2 certification. This package also includes the NVQ level 2 registration and certification fees as well as a level 2 NVQ portfolio which you will eventually use to build work based tiling evidence for the NVQ qualification.

City & Guilds Weekend Tiling Course Package 5 (NVQ Level 3)

To really push the boundaries and test your skills and patience, this 50 day package of training and assessment is ideal. If you want to work towards achieving NVQ level 3 and achieve not only the relevant tiling skills but also an in depth understanding of site supervision then this is the tiling training course to consider. All courses that are detailed in Package 4 above are included plus 3 – 4 final level 3 assessments. This will require some training through the week due to the size and nature of the assessments - this is a real test of your tiling knowledge, skills and time management. This package also includes the NVQ level 3 registration and certification fees as well as a level 3 NVQ portfolio which you will eventually use to build work based tiling evidence for the NVQ qualification

If you just want a very basic overview of tiling in order to complete a small job you have at home then this 2 day tiling course at weekends is ideal. Choose either wall or floor tiling to suit your requirements.

This package of training will take you through basic introductory skills, moving onto more complex tasks before finally undertaking a City & Guilds assessment. Ideal if you want to have skills in tiling that complement other areas of your work: This course is ideal for Plumbers and Kitchen Fitters.
