Already working as a Plumber but need to achieve an NVQ?

If you are already working out on the tools as a plumber but have never achieved a National Vocational Qualification also known as an NVQ then we can help. Here at Able Skills we have assessors available who can visit your place of work and generally help you to complete a Plumbing NVQ.  They will test your competence on the job and provide guidance on how to properly put together a portfolio. Gaining this qualification is essential for working on most construction sites around the country.

You can get your own JIB Plumbers card, which will allow you to get on-site after completing a Level 2 NVQ.

How does it work?

If you already hold qualifications in the trade and you are looking to take on an NVQ, those qualifications will likely map over to the assessment and you will just need to be tested in the workplace. Our assessor will need to arrange two separate occasions to visit your place of work, this can be anywhere you are carrying out plumbing tasks, such as within somebody's home. You will be assessed on  you ability to complete the following tasks...

  • Maintain the Safe Working Environment when Undertaking Work Activities.
  • Maintain Effective Plumbing Working Relationships.
  • Contribute to the Improvement of the Plumbing Work Environment.
  • Install Non-complex Plumbing Systems and Components.
  • Decommission Non-complex Plumbing Systems.
  • Maintain Non-complex Plumbing Systems and Components

Don't hold any qualifications? If you are an experienced plumber but happen to not hold any qualifications then don't worry. We have developed a process to assist you in gaining an NVQ. This doesn't mean that you will need to start training, if you have at least a few years on the job then you are eligible for this route...

Firstly, you will be provided with a 'Home-Study Pack' which contains all of the theory knowledge, you'll need to study this in your own time before being assessed by multi-choice tests / assignments – undertaken in the training centre. From there you'll need to prove your practical ability, again, achieved by a mix of knowledge and practical activities in simulated conditions within the centre.

Then, once we have established that you do have a good working knowledge of the trade it will be time to have work-based assessments completed. We will send an assessor to your place of work to test your competence on the job over two occasions.
