According to a recent study, 1/3 of people don't check if their engineer is working legally

A third (33.3%) of UK adults admit they’ve not checked if the engineer working on their home’s gas appliances is doing so legally by being on the Gas Safe Register, according to the latest research findings by the government’s official gas registration body. This is not surprising as we take it for granted that the person we have hired is registered and working legally in any aspect, whether they are an accountant or a plumber. But this is obviously detrimental to not enquire about a tradesman's qualifications and registration!

Check if your Gas Engineer is working legally!

Why check? Would you like somebody to work in your home that hasn't undergone the relevant procedures, health & safety and competency tests? Didn't think so...These statistics showing that only 2/3 people check the legitimacy of the professional they hired, come as the Gas Safe Register comes close to completing 2,000 illegal gas work investigations in three years. More than two-thirds of which (69%) were found to be unsafe, meaning the people living in the properties investigated were in potential danger from faulty gas work.

Correspondent to this research thought that they are able to identify that their gas engineer was on the Gas Safe Register by noticing a logo on the engineer’s website or uniform (28%), or by asking the engineer (13%), rather than checking with the Gas Safe Register directly (28%). It is simple to check online:

Simply ask for the engineers' card number which should be a 7-digit number, enter it on the Gas Safe Register's website and get 100% confirmation of your engineers legitimacy...simple!

Gas Saftey Week!

Gas safety week is coming up and we thought it would be an opportunity to promote the Gas Safe Register. At Able Skills, we make sure that once our Gas students have completed the respective courses that they take the company and safety test so that they can be formally registered with the Gas Safe Register.

Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey, appointed by the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each area. By law, all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register! The purpose of this registration body is to ensure that the public and the engineer are safe. They do this by inspecting the work of Gas Safe registered engineers and investigating reports of illegal gas work. Additionally keeping the list up-to-date and accurate means that they can keep unqualified workers out of the industry.

At Able Skills, we promote working officially registered with all the correct tests completed. We don't want our students to work illegally at all, in fact, we promote the opposite and encourage tests like ACS, becoming 'Gas Safe Registered' and so on, it is really important for students to understand the benefits of working correctly to build a reputable name for yourself in the industry. Our instructors are all very experienced in their trades and can give you all the answers you desire. Sometimes it's easy to forget but when studying here at Able Skills make sure that you use them to your advantage they know the industry inside and out and can help you gain a great start in this line of work!
