Don't take the risk!

The police were called to a property in School Lane, Kettering, at 7am last Friday morning, after a report of a concern for public safety and welfare. Officers attended and assisted one man out of a flat within the property, who was taken to hospital suffering the effects of gas (carbon monoxide) inhalation. The officers who helped the man are also being checked over as a precautionary measure. Three appliances from Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service and a gas engineer attended, with the building evacuated shortly before 8am as a precaution.

Don't take the risk, prepare your home for the worst and stay safe!

Safety checks were carried out and the building ventilated, with residents able to return to their flats by 10.30am. School Lane was temporarily closed while the incident was dealt with, due to the number of emergency vehicles in attendance, and it looks to have been reopened now.

How could have this been avoided?

Any gas engineer will tell you that a carbon monoxide detector is basic and should be in every single home, they are cheap, small and could save the lives of your family and yourself. There is absolutely no excuse for this situation, it is obvious that the people inside the property didn't know there was a leak and it seemed to be reported by somebody nearby. The man, if he had a carbon monoxide detector he would have been aware of the problem much sooner and would have been able to evacuate and inform anyone else in the property to what was happening and in turn, he may not have suffered any ill effects from the leak.

This seems simple enough, and that is because it is! Here at Able Skills, we promote Health & Saftey and push for anybody completing a Gas course here gets registered with the 'gas safe register'!
