Electrical Safety Standard Changes

There have been some changes in terms of electrical safety standards when it comes to privately rented properties. Today we will be looking at these changes and identifying what this means for people who currently work as electricians as well as how to get involved with our electrical courses here at Able Skills. We provide comprehensive electrical training aimed at producing a high-quality of professional and have been doing so since 2003!

What are the changes?

"On 13th January 2020, plans were laid out in Parliament for ‘Electrical Safety Standards in the Private Rented Sector (England) Regulations 2020’. Once ratified by the House of Commons and the House of Lords, these new regulations will take effect from July 1st for new tenancies and April 1st 2021 for existing tenancies." The changes mean that electricians will now need to hold an additional qualification before being able to carry out work in these properties, the qualification in question is 2391 also known as Level 3 Award in Inspection and Testing. Landlords will know if you have this qualification as Scheme Providers such as the NICEIC have an ‘Approved Contractor’ status for those with the relevant Inspection & Testing experience.

Once the proposed regulations come into practice, it will be mandatory for private landlords and letting agents to ensure electrical installations are periodically inspected and tested at a minimum of once every five years by a qualified electrician, whether the property is occupied or not.
