Now that we are getting out of lockdown slowly, the construction industry seems eager to get the ball rolling on projects across the country. The first 3-months of the year saw the fastest rate in construction enquiries in the past 10-years! This is great news for everybody in the industry. However, there is a problem. There are not enough qualified tradespeople to meet this demand.

Construction trades

In fact, 38% of builders are struggling to find skilled bricklayers. Additionally, 34% are struggling to find skilled carpenters. Activity in all sectors has now increased drastically, but repair, maintenance and improvement saw the strongest performance with 55% of respondents reporting increased workload. This is likely due to commercial business opening back up and requiring maintenance services in order to open.

Interested in learning a construction trade?

With the fastest activity growth in 10-years the industry needs you! Here at Able Skills we offer a complete range of trades and hands-on training courses. Whether you are interested in Bricklaying courses, Tiling courses, Carpentry courses, Plastering courses or Decorating courses we have experts ready to help you gain the skills you need to jump into the workforce with confidence in your ability.

Whichever course you choose, you will be provided with all of the materials and tools you could possibly need. We focus on hands-on training and giving our students the space to learn whilst being supported by our incredibly knowledgeable instructors.

What you want to be archiving first is a City & Guilds qualification. Our City & Guilds Bricklaying Course is 3-weeks of intensive training during which you will learn the fundamental skills like the tools of the trade, building a cavity wall, constructing half brick corners as well as the health and safety basics. During this time you will put together a portfolio of your work.

After achieving a City & Guilds qualification you will want to gain some experience before returning to us to complete an NVQ. An NVQ or National Vocational Qualification is not a training course but instead is an assessment process. You will need to be assed on-site by one of our assessors on two occasions. They will judge your ability against the industry standard and determine whether or not you are competent on the tools.

The shortage is not just in construction!

With such a huge shift in construction enquiries, construction companies will also require the skills of Plumbers, Electricians and Gas Engineers. Here at our training centre we have been teaching these trades for 20-years now and understand what aspiring traders need from us. If you are interested in either of these careers don't hessite to contact us and ask some questions.
