Get yourself a Carbon Monoxide detector!

Recently, some alarming statistics have been revealed by the Gas Safe Register - The official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey. Showing that 82% of people would not consider carbon monoxide poisoning as the possible cause of a headache and or nausea - This is despite these symptoms being two of the most common signs of exposure to the poisonous gas! Here at Able Skills we offer a range of gas courses during which we teach our students about the importance of gas safety, which got us thinking about how buying a simple carbon monoxide detector for as little as £15 could save the lives of you and your family!

What is Carbon Monoxide?

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless gas produced when gasoline, propane, wood, charcoal or other fuels burn incompletely. A faulty gas appliance can leak the gas causing symptoms such as; headaches, nausea, breathlessness, dizziness, loss of consciousness and can even be fatal if exposed to a considerable volume. Appliances, such as gas fires, boilers, central heating systems, water heaters, cookers and open fireplaces can cause problems, many of us have most if not all of these in our homes so it is important to be aware and stay safe!

Where can I get a detector?

You can purchase a Carbon Monoxide detector from most places, the most convenient would probably be Amazon - They can be purchased for as little as £15 or so, to set-up your device simply plug into the wall or insert batteries depending on the detector and place in your kitchen or other areas of your home...The device will make a loud noise when it detects a leak of the gas notifying you that there is a problem with an appliance!  Most detectors have a “test” button on the front or back of the unit. To test, simply push and hold the button for approximately 20 seconds. You should hear at least two loud beeps(Make sure to test your detector every couple of months). Be aware that these devices do expire, however, most should last for around 10-years, a worthy investment!
