Amendment to the 18th Edition!

What is the 18th Edition?

The 18th Edition is the term commonly used in the industry when referring to the latest British Standards BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations, IET Wiring Regulations. It is basically a set of regulations that electricians need to abide by in an effort by IET to keep both the public and electricians safe during installations and provides rules and regulations regarding all aspects of electrics.

What's the purpose of the amendment?

With the growing market for electric vehicles there is an opportunity for electricians to profit by installing charging points within people's properties. With every installation there are regulations in place and this example is no different. The updated Section 722 will make installing charging points quicker and easier, and will reduce the cost of installations for both installers and consumers. Not only that but the regulations in general are in place to ensure the safety of all parties involved in installations - This amendment in particular is being introduced in preparation for the future, electric vehicles may not be mainstream as of this moment, however, it is clear that the car industry is moving in that direction. The UK Government, for example, is investing £400 million towards accelerating the roll-out of charging infrastructure to help meet it's target of 50% of new car sales be of low emission cars by 2030!
