We are now in December and it's getting colder and wetter by the day. This is the perfect time to get your boiler serviced before you're left freezing due to a faulty appliance. Gas Safe Engineers are preparing fro their most busy time of the year, the most common faults are usually with boilers and old cookers, with some appliances going 20-YEARS without being inspected! People are often reluctant to call out a Gas Engineer until there is a problem but regular servicing will mean that you are never caught off guard. Make sure your home and boiler is ready for winter!

Bleed your radiators:

Bleeding your radiators can help you ensure that your heating is as effective as possible, helping to keep you and your family comfortable. It can also help to save money by improving the efficiency of your system. Radiators may occasionally need bleeding to remove air that has collected inside and this simple thing really will make a difference in the overall flow of your heating system.  To do this, first, turn off your heating. Next, use your radiator key to turn the valve at the top of the radiator, retighten the valve once the hissing stops and only liquid comes out then turn the system back on.

Check your boiler pressure:

Another common cause of heating problems is low boiler pressure. This is typically caused by some of the water being lost from the system meaning that the expansion vessel requiring re-pressurising. It is normal to have to re-pressurise once or twice a year, however if you find yourself needing to do this more frequently then a service by a trained and Gas Safe Registered Engineer is recommended.

Call a Gas Engineer:

Once again, even if there is no immediate fault with you system and you, yourself can't identify any problems it is still vital to get you boiler serviced every 12-months to ensure everything is running efficiently and you are not being exposed to anything you shouldn't be such as Carbon Monoxide, which is a lethal gas that can leak from a faulty system causing nausea, sickness and even death in some prolonged cases. Make sure that the tradesperson is Gas Safe Registered as it is a legal requirement here in the UK. It is illegal to carry out work without being registered and they could cause more damage than good. You can ask the Engineer for their card and check their legitimacy online here.
