Plumbing systems can be delicate in the Winter!

It is freezing cold outside and this weather can have an adverse effect on you plumbing systems, from freezing pipe-work to fault boilers, the problems are annoying and tedious. In plumbing systems low temperatures can limit water supply to taps, showers and toilet cisterns. In heating systems this can limit water supplies to your boiler or heat source. As an added complication, water expands when frozen, so this can lead to boiler damage, cracked or burst pipes and substantial leaks. However, you can solve these issues by following some simply steps. - Today we will look at how to fix your frozen pipes and how to get involved in plumbing courses if you are considering a career in the trade...

Quick Tips:

  • If at any time during the winter you’ll be away from your home, you may be tempted to turn down the heat to save energy and money. However, turning the heat too low increases the risk of frozen and ruptured pipe-work. The damage caused by such an accident will be even greater if the rupture goes unnoticed for days, weeks, or even months so it is advised to keep the boiler running

  • When the temperature drops below freezing, water pipes in your home have the potential to rupture. If a pipe has become frozen or has even ruptured, turn the water supply off at the stop-valve as quickly as you can, which is often found under your kitchen sink or somewhere similar. Then contact a Plumber!

  • Preventing frozen pipes can be as simple as a little planning and installing foam insulation. Insulating foam sheaths are sold at most hardware stores in a variety of sizes and are easy to install

  • You can thaw frozen pipes by slowly applying hot water. Only ever attempt to thaw pipes that are easily accessible and/or at ground level. If you ever don’t feel competent thawing the pipe yourself, call in a professional
