PAT Testing Equipment.

 What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing or portable appliance testing is the term used to describe the act of using equipment to test portable appliances and electrical equipment is safe for general use. Most electrical safety defects can be found by visual examination but some types of defect can only be found by testing, therefore, it is important to carry out both a visual check and to test the appliance via testing equipment. PAT testing is required in tenanted properties, public buildings, such as schools, commercial building and many other places of work.

Why is PAT Testing Important?

Periodic testing of appliances is very important, there are many legislations in place such as the Health and Safety at Work Act of 1974 to make sure that testing is carried out on a relatively regular basis. The law simply requires an employer to ensure that their electrical equipment is maintained in order to prevent danger and doesn't specifically mention PAT Testing, however, most employers will take health and safety very seriously and will call on an electrician to carry out testing on all equipment that employees are using after all portable appliances account for 25% of all reported electrical accidents. This is a skill that is called upon a lot, therefore picking it up as an electrician is never a bad idea in any shape or form and most serious electricians will already have a great understanding of how to properly and efficiently identify problems with portable appliances.

How does our training work?

Our 2-day course is perfect for somebody looking to gain a solid awareness of how to follow testing procedures. This course is mostly theory-based and will also include how to use PAT Testing equipment and so on but will aim to give you an understating of a range of subjects including; electrical safety regulations, role and responsibilities, insulation and earthing, classification of appliances, preliminary inspection, test precautions, appliance testing using a portable tester, essential and optional tests, labelling tests, reporting and recording results and implementing a test programme. The PAT Testing Course will be completed by way of 2-online exams that are both open-book so it is essential that you have a copy of the IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. We also recommend this as pre-course reading material.
