Here at Able Skills, we teach students the proper procedures when going about starting in the industry, and advice upon completion of our Gas courses that our students become 'Gas Safe Registered'. The Gas Safe Register is the official gas registration body for the United Kingdom, Isle of Man and Guernsey, appointed by the relevant Health and Safety Authority for each area. A building company has been recently fined around £16,000 after it removed a domestic boiler flue and left its products of combustion escaping into a new extension. The work was carried out by employees who have no Gas qualifications and are not registered...Making it an illegal removal, which is why the company has now been charged for this incident.
Birmingham Magistrates' Court heard that the company in question was working on an extension to a house's kitchen in Aston back in 2017. Before the work started, a gas boiler had been located in the kitchen and its chimney/flue exited through the rear wall of the property. During the work, the original flue outlet was removed and an external wall was built around it. This had the effect of completely enclosing the flue with no direct external exit point for the boiler to vent outside. As a result, the family of six were exposed to the risk of products of combustion, including carbon monoxide.
What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is a colourless, odourless, and tasteless flammable gas. Poisoning from this Gas can be fatal, and typically occurs when a person inhales it as an excessive level. This family were put into a situation that could have harmed their health and even permanently effected them and potentially could have been fatal!
