The heating industry is a bit of a minefield if you don’t have any experience of it yet. There are lots of different terms that you’ll hear – boiler engineer, gas plumber, boiler fitter, heating engineer, boiler installer – all referring to the work of installing gas boilers. So, it makes sense that a boiler installation course, or a boiler engineer course or a similar central heating installation course, would be what you’d look for if you want to be able to fit boilers in the UK. 

But a standalone course in boiler installation isn’t the same thing as completing the qualification and registration pathway needed to legally undertake gas boiler installation. Instead, you need to train to become a domestic gas engineer. 

This guide explains what’s covered in boiler installer training and what isn’t. What we actually mean when we’re talking about gas boiler installation training or a heating engineer course. Who can become a boiler installer and what qualifications they’ll need to legally install domestic gas boilers in the UK. As you’ll find out, installing gas boilers needs more than a boiler fitting course; it also requires appropriate gas qualifications and Gas Safe Registration. 

What does a boiler installation engineer do?

A boiler installation engineer works on domestic heating systems, domestic boiler installation and maintenance. 

It’s who gets called out to do Gas Safe boiler installations, do an annual service on a gas boiler, or do emergency repairs or replacement if a boiler’s on the blink. 

What qualifications does a boiler installation engineer need?

Given that the work is with gas, there is a requirement in the UK to be registered with Gas Safe. While this isn’t a qualification, as such, it’s a regulatory registration; an applicant will need to hold specific qualifications prior to applying with Gas Safe to be eligible for registration as a boiler installation engineer. 

These include a recognised qualification such as an MLP, along with ACS in Domestic Core Gas Safety (CCN1) and ACS in Central Heating Boilers (CENWAT).

Being registered with Gas Safe is a legal requirement for installing domestic gas boilers. 

How to become a boiler installer

To become a Gas Safe Registered boiler installation engineer, an applicant will need to have completed a Managed Learning Programme (MLP) and portfolio or another recognised qualification and hold relevant ACS boiler qualifications, CCN1 and CENWAT. 

While an NVQ Level 3 in gas installation is a common qualification pathway if you’re coming to the industry via an apprenticeship, for career changers wanting to move into boiler installation, an MLP is an industry-recognised qualification route when combined with a portfolio placement. 

In addition, you’ll need to hold the relevant ACS modules; these assess your competence with gas safety standards on the appliances you want to be qualified to work on. 

If you’re already working as a plumber and you want to ‘add gas’ to your skillset so you can work as a boiler installation engineer, then subject to an assessment, the MLP could be tailored to your existing qualifications and experience. 

What is covered in a boiler installation course? 

As we’ve explained above, there isn’t really a standalone gas boiler installation course. Instead, being able to do boiler installation is a professional outcome from completing gas engineer training, gaining suitable qualifications and obtaining the required Gas Safe registration. So, we actually need to look at what’s covered in the whole training programme. 

An MLP is designed to take a candidate through the practical and theory required to work safely and competently as a heating engineer. On an MLP, you’ll learn practical boiler installation, pipework, flues, commissioning and testing, along with other aspects of domestic gas work. 

It’s during this initial training time that you do a lot of practical work on a variety of appliances, so you’d find yourself working on common boiler manufacturers’ appliances, old and new, in a training setting while you’re learning installation principles.  

You’d also learn about Building Regulations in relation to boiler installations and Gas Safety Standards, which are applicable to all gas work and are assessed in the ACS. 

In the work placement portfolio, the skills and knowledge you’ve gained from 8 weeks in the training centre are put into practice in the real world under the supervision of a Gas Safe Registered engineer. This isn’t just work experience; it’s a requirement of the MLP where you collect a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate that you can safely work with gas. 

What are the career opportunities for a qualified boiler installation engineer? 

When working as a boiler installation engineer, there are opportunities to work generally as a heating engineer; this could be self-employed or employed by a heating installation company. Another option is to work directly with a boiler manufacturer as an approved installer.

Can plumbers install boilers?

A plumber who doesn’t hold a Gas Safe Registration cannot legally install a gas boiler in the UK. It’s common for plumbers to become gas engineers by completing additional training in gas, and pursuing ACS qualifications and then on to Gas Safe Registration. 

What are the legal requirements for installing domestic gas boilers in the UK? 

Any domestic gas boiler installations in the UK are legally required to be registered with Gas Safe. Without Gas Safe Registration, it is illegal to work on any gas appliance. An engineer needs to hold ACS for the appliances they want to be Gas Safe Registered for. 

Where can I find a boiler engineer course? 

Instead of searching for a boiler installation course, try looking for a Gas Safe course or for New Entrants Gas Training. A boiler engineer course could also mean a boiler fault-finding course – a great additional qualification to add to your skillset once you’re Gas Safe registered.
