What You’ll Learn

Able Skills has devised a 6 week professional tiling course which differs from any other Tiling Training Centre in the UK because it has been recognised by City & Guilds and accredited with a 4555-07 Certificate. This course will not only teach you to tile to a very comprehensive level, it will test your tiling knowledge by way of a C&G assessment and then test your skills again in what is as close to a real life situation as you can get in a tiling training centre! Able Skills dedicated Tiling Centre has all of the facilities that you will come across once you are working within the Tiling industry.

The course will cover:

Week 1 will teach you tiling basics, starting from scratch you will learn how to tile both wall and floor areas and gain a complete understanding of the requirements for any area you are planning to tile. Please see our Introductory Tiling course for full details of the content for week 1.

Week 2 is an advanced training week, providing you with the skills to tackle more complex areas and giving you the opportunity to build on your speed, technique and confidence. Please see our Advanced Tiling course for full details of the content for week 2.

Week 3 is an assessment of your skills for which successful candidates will receive a City & Guilds certificate and portfolio detailing the work done.

Week 4 we will teach you how to lay both marble and slate tiling. Please see our Natural Stone Tiling Course for full details of the content for week 4.

Week 5 will teach you Waterproofing and Floor Screeding

Floor Screeding

This 3 day course will be useful to Tilers looking to be able to cover all necessary and required aspects when undertaking floor tiling. As well as being able to tile the area, you can now learn to level and prepare uneven floors to receive tiles. After completing this course you will have the confidence and ability to ensure a perfect finish and enable you to tile the floor to perfection.

During this 3 day course you will be taught how to obtain the correct gradients should you be looking to complete wet rooms or walk in showers or to get floors flat and level to a finish. We will take you through floor screeding on new or alteration contracts to include:

  • Calculating the quantities of materials required
  • Gauging and mixing of screeding materials
  • Transferring datum levels
  • Preparing background areas, brushed and bonded
  • Positioning screeding battens/screeds
  • Laying and finishing floor screeds level and to falls Incorporating drainage inlets

Additionally you will mix and lay self leveling compounds which will include:

  • Preparing background areas
  • Calculating the quantities of materials required
  • Mixing of materials
  • Laying self leveling compounds including removal of any air trapped in the mix
  • Explain screeding equipment, laser levels, and tools required to complete the work competently and accurately.

Tiling in wet areas such as shower cubicles can often be problematic as there is always an element of doubt that if you apply your tiles onto plasterboard or marine ply board in wet areas, that you could encounter a failed tiled installation, in other words, the tiles may fall off after a short period of time costing you financially for the repair. Tanking is used to create a non-permeable membrane between your tiles and the surface substrate and this Tanking course will show you how to eliminate any problems you have encountered previously. We will show you how to apply specified tanking systems to these wet areas (prior to tiling) which will extinguish any doubt and ensure a tiled installation which will not fail.

We will go through the system of applying tanking systems from start to finish and you will also tile the area so that you can see the finished article.

Week 6 Finally….. Assessment week

In your final week you will work to a specification in a fully fitted kitchen or bathroom area. You will come across all of the problems a professional Tiler comes across when undertaking various jobs. You will be expected to complete the project with little supervision, demonstrating everything you have learned in the previous 5 weeks. You will be assessed on your completed work and the assessment will also be based upon your ability to:

  • Calculate materials required to complete the job
  • The attention paid to working cleanly
  • Working methodically and
  • Your awareness of health and safety

We will be looking to ensure that you have produced a finished product that any paying customer would be happy with.

How You’ll Learn

Like most tiling centres in the UK we do have standard perfect bays although ours are a lot bigger! We use these to start you off with and take you through your first steps in learning to tile (easing you in gently). Moving on through the weeks, we also have splash backs, shower cubicles, columns, steps and arches however the real tests are undertaken in our fully fitted bathroom and kitchen areas which allow you to deal with reality as you become more confident and progress through the weeks. We have devised this 6 week tiling course schedule to reflect reality in the best way possible, we will attempt to cover every eventuality to the best of our ability to ensure that once you start working as a Tiler, nothing comes as too much of a surprise. With the knowledge and skills achieved by attending Able Skills tiling courses, we believe that you will start out as a competent Tiler and become better skilled as years progress and you spend time on the jobs you undertake. All of our Tiling courses are entirely hands on with excellent support and tuition provided throughout the time spent with us.

Courses Open To You After

If you want to learn that bit more and consider working towards NVQ then maybe our NVQ Level 2 Tiling Course or even the NVQ Level 3 Tiling Course is an option for you. We will take in to account the time already completed on this course and adjust the price accordingly.
