Course details

This City & Guilds 2396 - Level 4 qualification in Design, Erection and Verification of Electrical Installations is an advanced course for those with solid experience in installing and commissioning electrical installations. This award is ideal for qualified electricians wishing to expand or update their professional knowledge and skills and it is intended for personnel in electrical contracting companies who have responsibility for the quality of the design, specification, installation and verification process. It addresses, in particular, the detailed implications of BS7671: Requirements for Electrical Installations. Good design is at the heart of reliable, safe and durable electrical installations and this qualification demonstrates that you have the knowledge to design and verify electrical systems to meet appropriate legislation.

The course is theory based over five days, however the learning continues beyond the classroom which covers detailed analysis of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) along with an intensive and progressive development of design procedures, including all the many calculations. The award is assessed via a three-hour written exam set by City & Guilds, which takes place on a separate evening a week or so after the course dates. Structured revision assistance is provided to get you up to speed. You will also need to complete a City & Guilds set design project, for which the minimum recommended time is 40 hours. This is carried out in your own time.

Before undertaking this qualification you should seriously consider undertaking the C&G 2391-52 Award in Initial and Periodic Inspection and Testing of Electrical Installations, unless you already hold its predecessors C&G 2394 & 2395. We strongly advise that you have industry experience and it is essential that you have achieved either the C&G 2382- Certificate in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018 or similar qualifications where you have demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the 18th Edition in order to ensure that you have every opportunity of achieving this level 4 qualification. We may also consider undertaking a short telephone or personal informal discussion with you to ensure that you are aware of what will be required to achieve this qualification and the time frames involved.
