5 Things to know before taking an NVQ in Plastering!

This list consists of 5 things you should keep in mind before enrolling on a Level 2 NVQ Plastering Course. No matter which one of our plastering courses you are looking at make sure that you understand the course you are taking, read the course description carefully and consider your options. We offer many diffrent courses here at Able Skills, this course, in particular, is for those wanting to learn to plaster and gain accredited qualifications. Additionally, achieve a level 2 NVQ, this 8-week training option is ideal.

1:

Firstly, This is an 8 Week Course, 40 days in total. This course can also be taken over a series weekends for people who have prior arrangements or have an existing job that maybe you can't get time away from. Taking the course over a series of weekends means it would take a set of 20-weekends to complete!

2:

Secondly, the whole point of this 8-week plastering course is to provide you with an understanding of the City & Guilds qualification and a very in-depth idea of what is required to gain an NVQ. This combination of training gives you a great opportunity to secure work and achieve additional qualifications.

This Level 2 NVQ Plastering Course is preparation, not the NVQ itself. The next step upon completion is to be assessed in the work-place to have your progress monitored and recorded in order to be certificated for the NVQ level 2.

3:

Next, keep in mind that by registering you for NVQ, you can also gain access to a CSCS Experienced Worker or Trainee card (if you arrange independently to sit a CSCS test) – this will further enhance your access to work.

A CSCS card is required when working on most construction sites for more information on the CSCS card itself and the diffrent types of cards there are - Click here

4:

During this Level 2 NVQ Plastering Course, you will be trained and assessed to achieve a variety of units as well as receive training which reflects ‘reality'. We have individual workspaces for our students where they can work and gain experience that will be useful out in the field when they start working.

You will be trained and assessed across the following areas:

  • Plasterboard and skim a ceiling
  • Direct bond and skim with plaster
  • Plasterboard and skim patch repair
  • Plasterboard, float and set patch repair
  • Prepare and plaster ceiling
  • Plaster, float and skim wall with window

There are a few other options when considering an NVQ in plastering! The options are only available to those who have either completed a Level 2 Plastering course previously and those who have at least 5-years of experience working out in the industry.

Option one - OSAT

If you have spent less than 5 years plastering, we recommend the following:

We have our own Assessors and Internal Verifiers, all of whom are City & Guilds and Construction Skills approved. As long as you are working within the Plastering Industry, we can come and assess you on site.

In order to qualify and register for this plastering NVQ, the following criteria must be met:

  • You must work within a 60-mile radius of Dartford – Postcode: DA1
  • You will need to be employed in a role that is related to plastering

These qualifications (NVQs) focus on practical skills and knowledge. Developed and approved by people who work in the industry, they are a great way to get into construction or to boost your career by developing new skills and knowledge through the assessment of work-based competence.

Option two - EWPA

This is a fast route open through Construction Skills (CITB). It is available for workers with a minimum of five years of plastering experience and who do not need any further Plastering training.

All candidates must:

  • Be site experienced in all the stated skills of the Plastering NVQ
  • Have sufficient experience of the skills of the NVQ, so that planning your working day, problem-solving and decision making and working to deadlines (with regard to Plastering) are a usual day-to-day activity
  • Have an ability to cope with the demands of an intensive practical assessment process
  • Have an ability to work safely at all times
  • Have an ability to discuss your work activities with others

This fast track route is not complicated and can be completed in a relatively short time frame if all of the evidence required is readily available.
