Better Safe Than Sorry!

The Gas Safe Register have recently launched a new campaigned named 'Better safe than sorry' in an effort to raise public awareness of CO poisoning also known as Carbon Monoxide poisoning. A survey they carried out reveals that more than three quarters of people (82%) are unlikely to consider CO poisoning as the possible cause of a headache and nausea - This is despite these symptoms being two of the most common signs of exposure to the poisonous gas. Here at Able Skills we teach Gas courses so we are always looking to keep informed on what is going on in the industry and general news surrounding gas. We promote health & safety and inform all of our gas students that registering with the 'Gas Safe Register'.

Signs to look out for!

These findings are particularly concerning because the latest figures show that 5.5 million homes in the UK have unsafe gas appliances, such as gas boilers, cookers or gas fires, which can cause CO to escape. Only 20% of those surveyed said they always stop using a faulty gas appliance until it has been fixed, and just 42% get their gas appliances serviced every year by a Gas Safe engineer. When working out in the industry within a domestic setting as a Gas Engineer you should provide advice on how to stay safe to the public such as purchasing a Carbon Monoxide detector that can be purchased for as little as £20!

This new campaign is focused on a particular message that if you are experiencing 'hangover like symptoms' that you may actually be experiencing the effects of Carbon Monoxide possibly caused by a faulty appliance within your home...The Better Gas Safe Than Sorry campaign was launched at Birmingham’s Bullring. An emergency butty van shared potentially life-saving information on the dangers of CO, as well as giving away a delicious bacon butty and non-meat alternatives. The UK’s favorite breakfast hangover cure was a mouth-watering way of highlighting the similarity between hangover symptoms and those of CO poisoning.
