City & Guilds qualifications are recognised across the world and the construction qualifications are often taken round the globe for tradesmen/women to work. Getting recognised qualifications are vital when looking to start a new career as it gives you the best possible chance to be successful and get a job.

Here at Able Skills we have City & Guilds courses across every construction trade and year after year we see lots of students coming through our centre as they look to start a new career. Whether they are looking to become Carpenters, Bricklayers or even Decorators, we have the courses available for our students to achieve a City & Guilds qualification.

So many of our students come to us with a future plan in mind. Some will take their qualifications out to another country and some will look to get straight out working. They all have one thing in common and that is the career change they are making. Most students coming through our doors would have been working in a completely different role and now looking to join the construction industry.

We have spoke to only a few of our current students who are looking for a complete career change while on our courses and gaining a City & Guilds qualification.

Abby

Firstly, we have Abby who has been working for various companies such as Pets at Home and Barclays, however, she has never had a proper career. Her partner is currently an Electrician and was the main reason she decided to join a trade. Abby is five weeks into her City & Guilds and NVQ Painting & Decorating course, so far, she is very happy and is looking forward to a proper career and a better wage.

Abby plans to make her first job finishing her home. After she is looking at going self-employed and start working for herself. She has been extremely pleased with her course and even called her tutors ‘Awesome’.

Jack

Next up is Jack, he is currently working through his City & Guilds and NVQ Bricklaying course. Jack is halfway through his course and is progressing very well. After working as a labourer for a few years, Jack decided he wanted to start earning some more money, getting his bricklaying qualification offered the chance to gain an industry recognised qualification and start him up in a proper career path.

Previously from Guernsey, Jack is now living in Brighton. He is into his music and is looking to get a stable career to help fund his passion for making music. Also, he has always had a dream to build his own home. He decided to come to Able Skills over a public college because of the maturity of other students and staff. Jack has praised the friendly staff and amazing teachers.guilds

Jonty

Last but not at all least we have Jonty, who is working through his City & Guilds Carpentry and Joinery course. He is going through a complete career change with us, formerly an Estate Agent, Jonty is now looking to get a proper career going and get out of the office environment. Jonty is a very creative person naturally and gaining these skills will allow him to use his creativity in his every day life.

Jonty is looking at taking these skills across Europe as he is moving to Spain. He plans to go more into the joinery side of things as he wants to go into Cabinet Making and eventually go self-employed. He is into his sixth week of training and couldn’t be happier with what he has achieved and the help he has received from all his tutors.

Changing careers is never easy, however, these students are showing that it’s all possible if you put your mind to it. Our courses are perfect suited to get you started and industry ready no matter which trade you are going into.

We would like to wish Abby, Jack and Jonty all the best for the future and hope they have very successful careers!
